Stuff the wave gear. I had a ball last time running the slalom gear through the waves and chasing the swell lines up the coast. Just worried a few by doing 20+minutes runs out to sea, just so fun. Racing in it would be awesome.

All the people that sail Coros use wave gear and don't have any slalom gear. If you make it slalom gear only you'd lose most sailors. Also the idea of the event is fun. It's not supposed to be a PWA event. You'd get way more numbers if you made it for wave gear.

Run what you brung is best but to even it all out if you rock up with slalom gear it must be obligatory to complete a wave 360 on the way in...or maybe a taka..

Edit- it is also an excellent idea, crack on bring the fun back, also see if you can get a beer sponsor!

Thanks mate! But I'm a teetotaller so a beer sponsor isn't on the cards haha

I was gonna suggest a tobacco sponsor as well... dont tell me you dont smoke either?

but in this day and age maybe the local avocado dip makers would be up for it?...

Whatever, its still a great idea and i take my hat off to anyone getting these things going, the more fun, friendly and for the craic the better

Great idea! where can I sign up? 10 sec headstart for the one with the best 80's fluo wetsuit!

Any indication of the period you re considering, summer school holidays?
Anyone knows if there will be a kid's summer windsurf camp at Coros again, maybe plan this just before/after that so the 70's/80's mum's and dad's can have their back to the future and the kids can make fun (feel embarrassed) of them and learn a thing or two about having fun.

Haha fark alcohol, it's a shiit drug (and I've tried a few), it's farked up the local Aboriginal population. Imagine waking up from a fun event not hung over?

Hopefully I can get this event off the ground! No ciggie sponsors either

It's a while away from registration but I'll let you know here! I'm thinking sometime in January at this stage but not 100% sure.

Cannabis sponsor?
Heck, hemp sails might be next.
Way better post sail pain relief than ibuprofen or booze and ciggies and good to go next day.

Haha, this will be a drug free sponsored event. If someone wants to smoke a spliff in their van, I won't stop em.

Will this be the 2025 Australian Defi Wind?

Could be thousands of people competing. I am going to try to join the Australian Defi Wind.

Any entrance fee? Prizes?

It'll be way better than Defi Wind haha...actually 1500 windsurfers might get a bit crowded at Coros.

There will be an entrance fee to help cover costs of running it. Haven't worked out what yet. Probably something around the $100 mark. I'm putting a lot of effort in this so I'll probably end up spending at least $10,000+. I'm hoping to source an LED screen so you can see heats run from a drone from the club.

Am also wanting prizes for sure. This is after all a 'World Championship' which is a bit tongue in cheek but it will help get enthusiasm from the punters.

I'm also wanting to find a solution for running the event in case the wind is under 15 knots which is a very real possibility in Geraldton. Peter Kenyon from the Geraldton Windsurf Club came up with a great solution to use inflatable windsurf boards. I'm going to attempt to find a brand who's willing to sponsor the event with 8 boards so we can still run heats. I figure it will still be heaps of fun trying to beat your mates through the surf at Coros on one of these things then standing on the beach.

Something like this - windsurf.star-board.com/windsurfing-boards/inflatable-windsurfing-boards/sup-windsurfing-inflatable-board/

Thought I'd ask. Seems like wa has a bit of a tour going these days. Do you know what events time with the world wave rally

Looked into the LT. Problem is;
1. They are all privately owned meaning I'd have to purchase them
2. They are fragile
3. Hard to store once event is over

Wave Rally finishes on the 12th and the Youth Oceania event will start on the 14th at Coronations. A few weekends after that will be the Margies IWT event. Other than that there will be other events before and after these dates still to be confirmed by WWA.

Seems relatively low risk of light winds .. better off waiting for 20+ knots of wind, rather than running a comp in 10 knots .. unlikely to be a tropical storm to block winds for 2+ weeks.

Majority of people should be flexible, as they are most likely ...
a) travel long distance to get to Coro, hence waiting a week for wind isn't a big deal to their schedule, or
b) Perth locals that can wait until the next weekend

A small percentage may be unavailable to wait for wind and need a refund.

Anyway, just thoughts/opinions to consider.

I would prefer to hang out on the beach, drink beers, and chat with famous people like the Flying Dutchman .. rather than Lt sailing in 10 knots.

This summer we had a period from Dec that lasted for 6 weeks of light winds. My thinking is why not have an option for low winds? It would still be fun trying to putt out through waves or whatever racing your mates/pros. There will be plenty of time to be hanging on the beach chilling with everyone between heats. Problem I've got in flexibility is that that the hire companies for the equipment needed aren't flexible at that time of year. They have too many events on for me to change their schedule last minute. I have to pick dates and run with it.

I did a light wind version of this with raceboards and honestly it was a blast.
Had a short course for beginners and a longer one for better sailors. Had a mix of club owned Konas, a few big slalom boards and private raceboards. The raceboards won, slalom couldn't plane reliably.
Won and lost at the marks.

The event has been listed on Windsurfing Western Australia's website. Some of the details are not set in stone however this is a first step in making the event visible to the public. We're getting there!! Aiming for registration to open on the 16th of September.

And that, in a nutshell is why windsurfing isn't more popular.

Great idea to run whatever the weather, it's like the old "there is no bad weather just the wrong clothes"
There is no bad wind just the wrong kit.
It's a fun event, it needs to happen in some form or another whatever the wind does.

Trying to register as a member of windsurfing SA and it makes me join windsurfing WA to register. Is that right? Doesn't offer the single event fee just affiliate membership for $40. Not sure what to put in. Thanks
