I have been using only the long fuse since I went strapless and then installed new inserts, waiting for some better conditions to try the short one. Also I have this crazy idea in mind to try the long fuse plus my rear extension...
What are you using with the wing, when do you chose the 1150 against the 914 ? also would like to know board and sails
Let me know what you think of the short 80cm fuse in comparison the the 95cm when u try it.
If by long fuse plus rear extension u mean extending the 95 fuse and making it longer, this should stiffen things up, (pitch, i think roll too and maybe yaw as well). I've been told the reason they make a longer fuse to use with the 914 is so it doesn't become too pitch sensitive at speed. The faster u go an a foil the more sensitive it becomes to pitch variation, (up and down movement / ride height variation in relation to weight transfer / rider input at speed). So the longer fuse stiffens up the pitch making the wing less sensitive too it relation to your input so your not bobbing up and down too much (ride height varying). So you might find that by extending the 95 fuse this might stiffen up your pitch too much. Given that its a home made extension i'm guessing it might also cause other problems and feel terrible but i'm no engineer or physicist or anything so i wouldn't know. I like to know how it feels to you though. If you try it let me know.
I tend to use the 1150 in lighter wind than the 914. Generally I'd be using the 1150 from around 10knots and up, and the 914 from around 15 knots and up. The 914's normally my go to wing in stronger wind as it has a higher top end wind range than the 1150. At least that's what i'm feeling anyway. The 914 can be better than the 1150 in gusty patchy conditions as it has better glide, take off and a higher wind range that the 1150. So it's possible that where you might be struggling to get planning at times on an up and down, gusty and patchy day on the 1150 you wont have too much trouble getting going on the 914. The 914, in these same conditions can or will give you more control in strong gusts. Ie you might be overpowered on the 1150 in strong gusts and fine on the 914. The 914 will also make it through lulls alot easier that the 1150. I also use the HA 310 stab quite a bit with the 914. Works really well. Switching between the HA 280 and HA 310 stabs also stiffens / stabilizers things up. Ie moving from 280 up to 310 will stiffen / stabilize pitch and roll and maybe yaw (not sure about yaw, too me yaw feels looser too when going down in stab size between these two stabs but it might not be yaw i'm feeling). Changing stab size is also like changing fin size when windsurfing. Larger will give u more lift and power. Smaller will give u less lift and power. so smaller stabs for stronger wind and larger stabs for lighter wind. I've also used the 320 stab with the 914 and it works pretty well too. It doesn't stiffen things up in the same way though that moving from HA 280 to HA 310 does. This must be due to the different shape. Ie it's not a high aspect stab,
As for board and sails. I have 125L and 105L Slingshot Wizards and want to get a 90L Wizard too. Soon. Wouldn't mind trying the 87L Slingshot Freestyle board as well. But anyway, i rarely use the 125L Wizard so nearly always on 105L Wizard and prefer to use small sails. I'm normally on the water with either 3.3, 3.5, 3.9 wave sails, or 3.7, 4.7 Naish Lifts (foil sails) in lighter winds) At the moment my sail quiver's not ideal but i wont be buying my ideal quiver till i start working again.
I normally foil on the lake where we have decent reliable Summer sea breezes . Most days are around either 15 -20kts or 20-25 kts. Winter fronts are normally around 15kts up to around 30knts
The 914 can be a hand full though in the ocean swell and chop if its big enough. Due to the wide wing span it picks up alot more energy from swell and chop than the 1150 which can give you unwanted lift and make things tricky. When i foil in the ocean which isn't very often, i pretty much always use the 1150.
Anyway, i've written alot more than i was going to. Started going off on a bit a a tangent so i'll finish up.
Let me know what u think of things when you get a chance.
