Looks like the Jrs are foil tacking in competition now. Missed this from the IQFoil worlds a couple months back. Check it out at 44:10 and just after. Also, see how much of an advantage it is upwind around 1:15:51 with two tacks that by Shaw that drill the competition.

Theoretically, as a lightweight, I should enjoy their advantage. Realistically, I still suck.

I know what you mean, Im in that same spot. Got the lightweight advantage, but none of their agility/ability or fitness.

realistically, i don't know how much foiling tacks will come into play. Unless competition venues have relatively flattish water, i think foil tacks (even planing tacks) are very hard to do with any amount of regularity. Especially in rolling swells, with chop on top. Theres simply too much else going on a lot of of the time


i hope to do a foiling tack one day, but at this rate i'll probably throw my back out and be on a zimmer frame before then.

Got to see my first in-person air-tacks yesterday and today as a couple of US Olympic candidates were on the water with us. Noah Lyons (US-9) basically doesn't miss. It looks like he's trying to breach the board directly into the wind, switches way up there and then sort of sails it down to cruising height. Watching him and his training partner Alex Temko (less spectacular, loses a little more speed) and watching a few others suffer some brutal ejections, I'm full of admiration and have NO desire to even attempt one of these. Planing through a tack, sure, flying through - no way.

God dammit. This is ballet on the water.

Don't see myself even attempting a foil tack on race gear though. A foil jibe alone was enough in terms of "investment" in the skill. IMHO a foiling tack is a pure race move that doesn't have any particular advantage for recreational riding, whereas a foil jibe actually benefits an average rider, especially in the light wind.

Those are nice fast tacks, and are race-competitive, but they are not quite "full flight."

Whoohoo, I hope to be foiling Scenic View next week.

On the first slo-mo video, after the jibe, there's a proper foiling tack ... in my book, a "full flight" one. I don't see the board touching the water, unless I'm missing something?

Also, Noah's second at the beginning of the "dance" video. He touches water briefly on the exit but, if I ever do that, it's going to be definitely marked as a 'complete' plus he made it through dead upwind without touching down.

The fb video is great and his background in freestyle isn't hurting him. Just realized it was his sister, Lina, that scorched the ladies fleet in Japan.
