I don't do bigger surf but i agree with Soleman in it is confidence.

So if you go down the beach, it's over head and cracking you don't go out????

Ive never been a big fan of over head stuff thanks to my fitness i guess. Younger days no issue and had many days at Rotto and down south, but as a overweight middle aged bloke, paddling back out down south a few years back into head and half, nearly drowning i'm happy to say it slow me down

I like clean waves (don't we all) and now looking forward to a bit more tripping to get that, head high will do me just fine

All good. I wasn't having a dig either, just curious.

I recon double head is about my limit these days depending how gunho Im feeling

^^^^ I think how "heavy" the wave is has more to do with it than outright size. Head and a half of a super sucky barreling wave over 3 foot of reef is much harder to deal with than a big fat slow double head+ wall that you can do big slow top to bottom turns on.

The paddle out has a bit to do with it too.

Yeah a nice easy paddle around and breaking shoulder makes a big difference to me..

Id like to think i could charge like that but I'll wait and see if it ever happens.

Like the man said its all about confidence....being fit will give you more confidence....free dive training will give you more confidence....Clyde Aikau was still surfing big waimea into his 60's beacause he's confident he can not because he can still hold his breath for 10 minutes...

I did a course with Nam from Breath Enhancement Training http://www.bettraining.com/home.html a couple of years back when he came over to do a course in Fremantle. Highly recommended, tailored specifically for surfing and left with a decent training program. I wish I was on the east coast so I could be be doing regular sessions with them.

Freedive courses, did the course with Erez from Apnea Australia, www.apneaaustralia.com.au/ , super knowledgeable, big emphasis on safety, everyone hit 18m by the end of the course. It's a bit exxy but I will be looking at doing the Stage B course in the future once I sought my sinuses out, his knowledge is invaluable.

In Bali there is Apneaista in Ahmed(near Tulamben), nice spot, drops off the 40m+ within a couple hundred metres of the shore.

The BET course made the greatest impact on my surfing, freediving involves similar concepts but is obviously not specifically tailored for surfing.

BET website says if we can get a group together they will do interstate.

I'm keen and can probably get a couple of others. Anyone else?

One of the best pieces of advise I ever got when being held down surfing was to calm down and count to ten.

Usually the first thing you do is freak out and lose all your breathe. But if you relax and just start counting I'm usually able to get to the surface well before I reach ten.

I think the worst feeling is getting ready to break the surface and take a huge breathe only to hit your head on the bottom and realise you've been swimming the wrong way in the confusion

I wonder what they count to when held down at Jaws, Mavericks,Chopes, etc.
I'm guessing ten wouldn't cut it.

I think Mar Visser takes the cake with this vid on holding your breath 1.30 then swimming 50 meters under water

I see your breath hold video and raise you a 113m constant weight freedive video.
