Ive just come back from a boat trip on the south coast of Lombok. Everywhere we went had 2 to 4 times the crowd as when I did the same boat 4 yrs ago. Apparently cos of the new Lombok Airport. A lot of new roads has opened it up to scooters and car travel. Lombok is done

They're starting direct flights to Lombok from Perth now.
The area is going to get trashed more than it already does by the bogan surfers and tourist who think they are intrepid off the beaten path travellers by venturing beyond Bali.

Best hotel by far is the Novotel a couple of K's out of the centre of Kuta, stayed there 3 times, love it.

The Surfers Inn in right in the middle of Kuta. Looks pretty basic, but is popular with surfers. It has a cafe/bar attached.

As far as surf goes, Inside Grupuk is the most hassled spot around - can be stupidly crowded. Gets pretty good at low tide but is always full of Kook japs on mals who drop in. Maybe go elsewhere.

Hope this helps.

Yes to the bintang singlet but that was about 10 years and 20 trips ago.. No to the stickers except I did get one that said "I'm not gay but 20 bucks is 20 bucks". Hilarious.... I love all you characters that rub yourselves over being pioneers and at one with the Indonesian people cos you caught the fast boat to g land and had a broken Indonesian conversation with the mud hut people on the way to kongs... So spiritual.... The type of guys that keep the drivers card in their wallet and flash it round to guys at the pub on their way to Bali at home sayin" ring this guy, tell him u know me, he'll look after ya" haha! Let me guess, his name is wayan, right?!! Knobs...
Do you really think the Balinese people want you coming over with the intention of abstaining from all they have to sell so they can feed their families with your "spiritual experience?" Fack no they don't....
So hell yes I've got a bintang singlet and you've made me feel bad for not buying one since my first trip so I'm gettin another one in June and not even gonna bargain for it.... I suggest you do the same and save the om shantis for your DVD yoga session at home. (The DVD that I hope you buy from wayans mate wayan next time you're there)
Ter-ee-ma-ka-see....
(That means thanks for all you shame to be an Aussie un- cultured-best-mate-of-wayans's)[8D

Sweet as 71, sounds like my kind of Bali.... Wherever I go I run amok but always treat people the way I'd want to be treated, it's the Hindu way.

Ha, I think my original post has been taken way out of context...the singlet post follow up was just a friendly jab

My issue with Australian's in Bali is so many of them (always bogan) treat the locals like 5hit, trash the place, are unbelievably loud and obnoxious and make the rest of us look bad. They act like they have the right to be that way in a foreign country because they think the Balinese owe us a thank you for stimulating their economy, when in reality, they were doing just fine before any of us started going there.

I love smashing bintangs on the cheap. I love thanging around on a motorbike and giving the police a couple of green notes to let me go again. I love eating dodgy bowls of bakso and mei goreng for 5000 IDR a pop from some dodgy warung on the back of a bike. I come home drunk from a forgetful night out to find myself gulping down pints of water from the bathroom sink. I love all that 5hit. But throughout doing all that I always treat the people there with the respect that anyone should be treated with...and I'm sure the rest of you guys do.
Sadly, we're slowly becoming the minority over there. I've always felt over the past few years that Bali (well, Kuta) brings out the worst in the visitors and locals alike.
