Anyone ever saved coin like a madman to get a sweet looking board.....and then been bitterly disappointed.
I got a lewy which looked awesome in the shop but handled like a barge in the water. Another was the hypto crypto. Looks so awesome especially when ridden by Ando at g land. Problem is I am not Ando and g land is not my local.

Years ago I purchased two custom boards just before a surf trip as my old boards got stolen. The first time I lay eyes on the boards I new I made a mistake. They rode like tanks on a muddy field. It was a double wammie as I had to replace them after replacing my old boards that were stolen. Boards cost so much its heart breaking when they dont work or you get it wrong.

yea thats rough beatsurf!

I made the mistake of ordering a custom and forgetting to ask about glassing options.. only to get it and have pressure dings all over the deck after a few surfs.. when I called up he said that it was standard to used 1 x 4oz on the deck and bottom..

i kept it for 3 months then sold it.. it looked like agolf ball.. surf well though

Paid 1100 bucks for a custom Hypto Krypto from haydenshapes in NSW (the non GSI Thai junk).

Sweet looking board, rode like crap.

Ended up getting a similar shaped 5'10 Scud from Dave at Katana. Ten times the board for almost half the price!

Moral of the story: if you want a board to suit the breaks you surf, go see a shaper that surfs them too!

Nothing worse than a dud. Why don't they have test boards. At pretty much $1000 for the full set up these days you should be able to try before you buy. If you by a toaster from Kmart and it doesn't toast you take it back.

If you order a custom off a reputable shaper and your honest about your ability and where you intend to surf you world think it would be close so you take your chances. But if your buying one of the big brands in model X, Y or Z off the shelf, they should be able supply a certain amount of test boards to the shops. Even if you have to fork out 50 or a 100 if you don't purchase.

That's my 2 cents

I haven't rode one yet, but have mates that are shredding on them. I'm surprised by the negative comments as it has been their go to summer board.

Why don't they have test boards.
(?)

I took a used firewire out for a test run from one of those beachfront places at Scabs on a very untidy 3' windswell. Onshore.
I got a few rides that showed it's potential. I bought it. Maybe 650 clams.
The problem was that I wasn't living remotely near Scabs at that time and it was a piece of crab at my grounds. I then swapped it for what is now my go-to board.

But I digress...
Have had stockies and customs that were utter disappointments.
Got rid of my last one on the weekend, actually
Ummm, I'm still not sure about my last custom... Haven't had the required conditions.

learn how to surf!

the hypto is one of the best 1 board quivers you can get.
im no future tech carbon blah blah kinda person, but the shape technology hayden puts into a board is stuff other shapers wish they had the balls too manufacture.

i recently looked thru the pages of a surf mag and saw a board test.
there was a board in there that was a dead ringer of the current hayden board.

Thanks for your input.

Perhaps I should be more specific in why I didn't like the Krypto so some of you guys don't pull a muscle while jumping to conclusions.

I had a 5'10 Hypto, and found it way too corky for my liking. I didnt like the rail line and the rails were pretty boxy on it as well, but I guess at that size and with that much float it could have been a decent summer groveller.

If I were to order another one I'd at least go the 5'8, maybe even the 5'6.

As for the surf mag review, every board looks like the Hypto these days, wide noses and rounded pins are the new black.

I remember a board I bought mid 90's, typical of the time - thin, low volumed, huge rocker, etc. So unsuited to an average joe like yours truly. Never again will I be fooled by the slick marketing.

On the flipside though, it's great we've got so much variety now! Awesome era for surfboards.

But problem is not enough time and money to ride them all

Agree with youse on local shapers too. Worth their weight in gold imo

I reckon you need to develop a relationship with a shaper and both of you learn what works and refine it over time. If you pick and choose completely different models you'll always be confused.

I've gone the other way than kryptos. Short, but with width through the tail and a more pulled noise width compared to the last one. A pin tail for small waves doesn't make sense to me.

the only reason the rounded pins work in small waves is that they generate more speed quicker but i do agree they dont work as well in mushy gutless small waves.

when i first moved to my now home, i thought this would have to be the best option too.
I love what the guy did, but its just another wide waisted shortboard.

Shapers and designers like Firewire and HS have totally new and exciting things that local guys just can't keep up with. (in my opinion).

If your not diggin their model, try something else. After all their ranges are huge.

but to get on here a bag a brand and model, simply because you can't ride it, is pretty lame. that white the kiteboarders do.

where was carbon even mentioned???

I'm talking about flat fish entry rockers with performance shortboard exits, displacement hull fronts, flyered pin tails.

im ride PU and only PU, the carbon construction is irrelevant.

Relax! I like all your comments, It's good to hear all views. Technology has clearly surpassed the back yard shaper but the older generation just can't get their head around it. Ignorance is bliss to them.

I can ride it .... It just went like **** that's all.
That fact that its meant to be a groveller but had a pin tail like a gun and floated like a cork may have hAd something to so with it.

to be honest unless your punting huge airs, i dont really see why youd pay $900+ for a carbon board.

im talking shapes.

unfortunately people get stuck in there ways and when local shapers think their Dumpster Diver ripoff is the next best, high tech thing, it kinda leads to me loosing interest and unfortunately support.

enjoy.
