I had planned a school surf trip to Sumbawa for next year but it was canned at the last stage of the approval process. The boss indicated that an Australian trip would OK, so what do you guys reckon would be a good 10-12 day trip within a budget of 1200 bucks per person, the students are all in secondary years. We did have a group of 10 confirmed but may get another half dozen onboard plus three teachers.

Too far over 10 days...April is a great time to be in NSW south or north of Sydney. $1200 budget including flights would be huge and i would think its tough to pull that off with that budget. What about a camping trip down to Esperance and back the inland route? Beautiful part of the coast and would save the punters loads on flights. Alternatively fly to Sydney and drive to the Goldie...I think you would get smoked though on dropping off a vechile at an alternative location. That always seems to be the big cost issue. In April you would be unlucky not to get 7 or 8 good to very good days in mid to northern NSW. Loads of Great spots on route to camp at....if you decide to go that way PM me and I can give you a good idea of spots and distances / times. I try to keep my schedule free around April so I can take advantage of the conditions. It's an unreal time...warm water, early offshores or no wind, summer peaky swells from the east and the first real south swells of the season. It's heaven.

Thanks Ted, sounds like a great option. The idea was to hopefully catch a day at the Bells comp but with crowds and accomm issues we might look at hitting northern NSW, maybe fly out of Melb after a couple of days and just do that area, will definately pm you if it gets up.

I think the main question is how do I get a teaching job at your school or can I become a mature age student??.

April.
4-6 days live aboard at the Abs.
10 days with a few 4b's at S-Bend, Drummond or Horrocks.

Mid West cooks in April.

My sisters father in law is your vice, small world ...I second going somewhere in the Great Southern. There are heaps of empty beaches to suit a variety of abilities & plenty to do & see when your not surfing. Most of which require no more than a set of legs to experience, like Bluff Knoll. Camping down there at that time of year is no biggie, otherwise accommodation is far more reasonable than a lot of other paces in WA.

Abrohlos was a bit too remote Mick so safety issues will block that one, deep south coast is an option but one that a few crew have done, any thoughts on Tassie? clean and constructive thoughts please!! NZ may be beyond budget eh?

East coast of Tassie would be a good call Bakesy. Easy user friendly surf spots, lack of crowds, cheap accom and not too much driving once you're there. I spent a bit of time there many years ago and scored heavily with only the Wavefinder atlas in lieu of any local knowledge. Probably not as consistent as Northern NSW at that time of year but plenty to do on the off days

If you're working at the same school that I'm thinking of, I can recall them sending kids to Africa, Sri Lanka, South America and even Ski Trips in the European Alps. Tell the 'boss' to pull his head in!

Maybe as an alternative you could look at the Gold Coast/Byron/Great Ocean Road

If by sumbawa you mean lakey peak region the groms are likely to get stuck over there due to the sumbawan tradition of randomly canceling public transport for no given reason, ....add to that they will probably get every thing they own stolen if they happen to venture down surf periscopes.....that's if they survive the crazy driving from the ferry terminal in bima to hotel amangoinsaney at lakey. Lost my mind there in 01....did score some of the rights of my life though. Got stuck due to ferry cancelled....surfed till I could surf no more.

Kangaroo Island or Torquay...talk to the guys at SEDA or surfing Vic and they might be able to T up some learning stuff for the kids during the contest...there is usually heaps of swell on and you could probably get some accom back inland or toward 13th without too many hassels

Kangaroo Is would be an awesome trip...Apollo Bay would be a great location if you wanted to be near Torquay, uncrowded waves & heaps of different options for different conditions. Awesome coastline with the best road in Australia built by Oz Diggers after the 1st WW & beautiful forest trails up behind the town as well.

Gotta agree with MickPC - only been to that stretch of road twice and it is the stuff dreams are made of - so many possibilities of waves.

Anywhere where ocean meets forest is magical - put a road along it and that just tops it off.

April should not be too cold as well (I stress the 'should' ha ha)

Could spend weeks on that road!

Shot at just the right time to make it look like there's a viable wave, but I've never seen anyone surf there. Good place but.

No, a power pole. The picture is deceiving. There is about 200m from the beach to that wave. It's windy 99% of the time and there's nothing to do but play golf. There's weed on the beach and a strong current so swimming sucks. If there's swell, taking a boat out can be sketchy.
