game of Chinese whispers anyone

maybe Woodo could confirm with his Bro??

You at work early Dave?

Approx 3km's which is not past the south cardinal marker.
For anyone who has been out and around that marker they will know that it is not far off shore at all.
Have a look at it next time your down the beach or driving along the coast and tell me that if you were in the water and 4 plus metre white was just there you wouldn't want to have some sort of warning...

I spoke with my mate this morning and he said they were notified by Surf WA ( i think he said, the chain of information moves down through three different bodies[}:)]) they were simply told to keep a keen lookout as it was reported 3km out to sea.

He said Ch 7 would have either monitored the Water police radios or possibly been notified by water police.

He actually went on to talk a little more about shark sightings and patrols. He said that the chopper has already been scaled back and he believes that the chopper is one of the better answers to help them notifie people early. He also said though that Surf clubs are having trouble getting people to listen to warnings anyway. They want to police to take more action to have people (especially surfers) charged if they don't get out of the water when warned because its making there job harder to see the shark, often resulting in them then having to get in the water with the shark (all be it in duckies or paddle boards).

I like Shark alarm but find that they get there info a little late as well. They have been chasing for more up to date (time) info from the authorities but i think they are not getting exactly what they are wanting. I wonder if some show of support will help make it a bit more real time and relevant

Haha and you coped a red thumb from some one for your efforts

Its okay I've got big shoulders But thanks.

Funny enough i had never thought about it from the Clubbies point of view. Many times have seen alarms and them waving there arms only to turn and ignore. So i will consider them next time as we do have to remember first and foremost these people are volunteers giving up there time.

I agree totally for me too, even though i am pro shark protection. But i will also say going out into North bridge drinking is also not what it used to be for me

Id just like more effort from the authorities put into something like shark alarm. Here is an example.

http://sharkalarm.com.au/event/280

Shark bumps girl at Ocean beach Denmark and three days later the warning was entered onto Shark alarm , and they had to get that info from the West Australian. Real time reports will mean that if your entering the water you can check it first for added safety

Very far king sad

I dont recon knocking a couple on the head would hurt the species too much tbh.

prob ok for us, not so good for the kids- my high school stress was offset by beachy barrels at the local, extreme wetty rash and sunburn, what will they substitue their teenage stress with- getting into trouble or a quick paddle between the whites? at the moment trouble sounds the safest option. Maybe well get my boy into freestyle MX as a safer alt.

Agreed but we don't want to go through that whole debate. Again...............

It's weird but i now feel safer spearfishing at steep point than I do diving for crays metro.
Still undecided if i'll bother diving metro this year. It's something I have done every year for years and that i really enjoy but just have a really creepy feeling about it ATM. I'm a bit spooked to say the least.

There is little research into great whites, but this from the wikipedia page on great whites.

"Natural threats

Although the great white is typically regarded as an apex predator in the wild, it is in rare cases preyed upon by the larger orca (also known as a killer whale). Interspecific competition between the great white shark and the orca is probable in regions where dietary preferences of both species may overlap.[36] An incident was documented on October 4, 1997, in the Farallon Islands off California. An estimated 4.7–5.3-metre (15–17 ft) female orca immobilized an estimated 3–4-metre (9.8–13 ft) great white shark.[43] The orca held the shark upside down to induce the tonic immobility and kept the shark still for fifteen minutes, causing it to suffocate and then proceeded to eat the dead shark's liver.[36][43][44] Another similar attack apparently occurred there in 2000, but its outcome is not clear.[45] After both attacks, the local population of about 100 great whites vanished.[44][45] Following the 2000 incident, a great white with a satellite tag was found to have immediately submerged to depth of 500 m and swam to Hawaii.[45]"

This would suggest that if we were to brutally kill a couple off our coast they would leave.

I agree also. Better keep this thread up for what else can be done to help prevent attacks. Ideas

Although i guess that's Blakey's call as he started to thread. Sorry

I heard about it on radio news on my way to the beach (scabs) at around 11am

report said GWS spotted about 300m off Trigg Beach [}:)][}:)]at 830am!!!!
(media sensationalism)

I was in the water just down from the point and we got buzzed by the helicopter overhead at around 9.30 or 10ish. Not exactly sure of the time. Pilot was doing the usual patrol pattern and then stopped over head for a bit then buggered off. I snapped my leash on the the next wave and went in and left so thought nothing of it.

Anyone else in the water then?

Gotta give the red ladies something to thumb over But as i said my bad..

In the older days of shark spotters they often would wiggle the plane wings up and down to notify of shark, or in Newcastle they used to drop a toilet roll i was told by a old fella one day

So many choppers fly up and down these days its hard to often tell whats what.
But they also don't fly past the metro area.
