Wave pool....

Check this one out

www.carvemag.com/2014/03/man-builds-human-powered-wave-pool/#.Uxbr5XgazCS

This man has built a human powered wave pool three hours way from the ocean in the middle of Java?Yes stop for a moment and take that in?built his own wave pool.

?Freds wave? is a simple mechanism that he has been perfecting for a few years bringing surfing to kids who would probably never see the ocean. While the wave isn?t technically up to the standards we have seen recently, we still think it is bleddy amazing. How much fun are these kids having?. Fred we salute you?.And we are off to the scrappy?

How's the concrete wall finish. You'd definitely need a nose guard.

Thanks for that link Weiry - made for some interesting reading. 2 points especially:
1. At the summit, speakers tossed out tantalizing what-ifs: A national surfing league, much like the NBA, with feeder teams and city affiliations. Live, televised surfing competitions staged with predictable waves in a massive surf arena.

Jeepers I can just see this now - Western Sydney Bogans against Collingwood

2. "The problem is, `surf culture' is about so much more than just riding a wave. It is about having a genuine respect and connection with the ocean," said Zac Heisey, a surfer and freelance writer who addressed the debate on his blog, In The Name of Surfing.

I think this is almost a load of crap these days. Yes it was true in the old days when no one surfed and people where experimenting with not going to work in the same job as their folks, not wanting to work, wanting to be a hippies, enjoying recreational pharmaceuticals, growing their hair long, wishing they had leg ropes and boards that went up and down a wave rather than across, not wanting to go to war etc. Times have changed. Surfers are not just surfers anymore. They are school teachers, lawyers, doctors and miners. They also still work at the pub, deliver papers and in some cases they are even prime ministers. Surfing is now pretty much a mainstream sport. People surf for all sorts of reasons - for exercise, because its cool, because its their gap year and they are from Sweden and in Byron Bay, because its fun, because they can, because its what their dad did, its what their friends do etc. Surfers are everywhere. People who try and claim that surf culture is much broader have missed the boat. Times have moved on. Whilst it might be that case for some for most it is not from what I have seen and continue to see on a day to day basis. I come across people who used to think I was a nut bag because I surfed 20 yrs ago who are now spending their Saturdays encouraging their kids to have surf lessons.

If anyone is in any doubt I am fully behind the concept of a wave pool and really hope they can get them to work properly sooner rather than later

I've thought about it and i think it would be great fun and seriously can't wait. BUT the idea of a competition in a wave pool, in waves that are simply identical, well once it might be cool to watch but a series i think would soon get very boring and repetitive
