A pretty smooth ride I reckon . You would need to take out a mortgage for a new one. One for the millionaires amongst the surfing community.

I can understand the reason behind it - the timber is super light weight yet when it dries out it's as hard as
btw - got a 30 foot+ tree in backyard if youse want to pop over & piss it off for us?

Diameter 8-10 inches the big bustard - perfect two slab

hollow in the centre of the trunks could be an issue , and also veneering costs or work involved in that could be the factor that inflates the price - you'd think that veneers would have to be thin enough to allow flexing so no fracturing after time - but there's no doubt the weight would be similar to the balsa ,,,, interesting.... more strength than balsa tho

I'm keeping the trunk regardless - who knows ,,,,

Stinky Pete (he runs the coffee side of our business) has one. Think it cost him just north of $3k. Stunning board. He uses it as a wall hanger, not for riding from what i can tell. Let me know if you want more info on it SMH - Mark

I wonder if Stinky Pete ever rode it. Did he Mark ? I,d be buggered if Id pay that much for a board and just hang it up. Classic nickname too . Stinky Pete the barista.

Yeah stinky pete's cafe' ,,, might drop a half decent fart me thinks I reckon these bigboards are "sunday cruisers" either that or maybe lighter again than i've first thought .... this stuff is remarkably light & hard when dry

any drop-ins would be speared from near 20 ft away

Tom Wegner was part of the reason/inspiration I started to build my own hollow timber boards... evn had to copy his big bad arse Dee Fins

heres a 12'6" built from left over paulownia and western red cedar

thanks

Its actually a bit of a dog to ride as I didnt put enough rocker in it only 4.5" in the nose.. live and learn

However its great fun in small waist high or under point waves. Supper fast down the line and the big Dee fin sets up a great hum and gives the feet a nice massage... I luv switching feet to turn and setting a line for speed runs, makes me feel real old skool riding it

heres another shot showing out line

cheers

I'd be extremely interested at 11'6 to 12'6. A big cruiser. But not at 9'6 and 15kegs. I ride a 9'6 at 6kegs. Even at 12's it would need to be 12-14kegs, not 16-20....

Paulownia feels light... but it can easily hit 17 pounds per cubit foot, which is nudging 275kg/m3. Water is 1000 and Western Red is about 325-350.

Balsa can get as light at 75kg/m3, calssified as Super Light. But Very Hard Balsa can range up to 250kg/m3.

Foams are about 30kg/m3.

that much 275 !- now that is food for thought and way more than I mused , TW must be shaving weight somewhere logically , maybe balsa slats , thinner veneers of paulownia too ....
Got me intrigued again Simo - know what I'm googling tonight now!
You are a wealth of info once more - cheers

Paulownia can hit 300kegs also. So it's kind of light for wood, but still pretty heavy compared to foam with a structural skin of fibreglass (be it epoxy or PU).

I told you before, I'm a bit of number man... I crunch numbers for a living.

Most varieties of Carbon Steels aren't far off basic structural grade, at 7.85 (t/m3). Aluminium is 2.71. Stainless is about 8.1. There's some ripper varieties of steel with mind blowing properties that the Oil & Gas industry uses, but mostly they are around that 7.85 to 8 mark.

I call 316 Stainless "SSS". Stainless stainless steel... but there around about 6 regularly used grades of stainless, and also 3 basic common grades of normal rusty carbon steel. Don't get me started!

The heavy weight carbon bitches are Gold, Uranium, Plutonium, Tungsten and Platinum. Mostly up around 20x density of water. 20,000kegs/cube.

The best of the best is Titanium at 4500kegs. This sh!t does everything. It's just too expensive to be practical. Easily the "best of the best".

Its currently hanging on the wall of my patio....

Havent weighed the 12'6" but its less than my 10" sup which is 11kgs. Paulownias a great wood, dosent suck up water like balsa, dosent de-gas like cedar, easy to work with and cheapish to buy. Fast frowing plantation timber and very versitile I have also used Paulownia as a 2-3mm laminate over a vac bagged epoxy and as a core material for kite boards. One shaper over here uses it as a venneer (less than 1mm) laminate in his epoxy boards, plenty of kiteboard builders are using it as there cores

I also built this 6'6" fish that came in at 6kgs, the other fish is 2-3mm skins over eps core thats pretty light.

The weight disappears on the water, well sort off. Simo your numbers are pretty spot on (I am a numbers man too)
