It does get you spooked though. First paddle out today sat up on the board and saw a fin coming at me, only then did I see the dolphins body. bloody dolphins.

I was 2km along a beach only surfer in the water (so I was desperate), I couldnt stop looking around me for the next hour.

I had my eyes peeled to Stu, I was by myself pretty much and was kneeling a lot..

The other day you mentioned the port Stephens shark thing, here is the research program link from the csiro that started after that story. there are also some links right and left with more info.

http://www.cmar.csiro.au/tagging/whitesharks/oct2008/ptstephens.htm

The tag tracks are on the link I put up the other day on page 1.

Haha, my post from Page 1 has been "pulled". Fair enough. Are 7S a sponsor on these pages? They do make a reasonable board at a reasonable price, and many guys do rate them highly.

Plus they need to be commended for breaking away from the White 6'0 Comp Board Mould.

They serve as a great stepping stone from 6'0 Comp Boards, into Mid Lengths, and onto Longboards, and the riders will eventually see the big range of beautiful customs that McTavish offer!

Apologies for any offense caused, condolences to the family, friends, and girlfriend of a lost surfer, one of us.

More info on other brilliant mid-lengths, visit;
www.mctavish.com.au
PS - there is still 1 or 2 spots left on the Maldives Boat Trip....
Here's the boat and the warm water!

This caught my attention...
http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/wa/14247671/world-told-of-death-coast/

Article says this about what the English news papers said;

...it was in Britain where the coverage was most hysterical.

British tabloid the Sun carried the story on its website with the headline "Surfer 'bitten in half' in deadly coast's fifth fatal Jaws attacks of the year".

Fellow tabloid the Mirror had the story accompanied by the headline "Air-sea search off Western Australia for killer shark that bit a surfer in two".

I watched one of the other videos, and didn't the guy on the ski virtually say that the body was eaten/consumed, without explicitly saying that?

Doggie, I agree, it is pretty chilling from the East Coast, and it would be even more chilling for those surfers on the West Coast.

Most surfers have quite a sanguine attitude to the possibility of a shark attack.
And see the ocean as a "shark's space".

The thing that seems to always happen, more so now due to instant news/the web is the feeding frenzy that the media gets into over "shark attacks".
Added into this we also get the "conserve vs cull" arguments.

As surfers we know what the risks are, both with sharks and many other assorted creatures in the ocean.Part of the joy of surfing is the chance to interact with nature both in the form of waves and also the wild life. Now i am not saying that sharks are what we hope to encounter, far from it.

Culling is not the answer IMO,there is no way to cull the area of sharks and not have a negative impact on nature.

The "shark tourism",now banned in W.A should have their skill and knowledge put to good use and be part of a tagging and study program, the more we know the better.
All these cage diving companies should be in a tagging and study program

So what do we do in the meantime? Watch AFL until Emu Export drips out of our ears?

I recon we kill 20 big ones that are 3m or bigger. I know I will feel better.

Move over East..........why?

1. NRL is always on
2. less GWS
3. long right hand point breaks
4. lots of kiwi chicks for you to get to know better
5. Better AFL team

But the most important reason to consider this is that....................

6. The Shire is over here

Sorry for having an opinion and not a solution.

So say we go with your idea.............

Cull them,so you would want to protect the main or most popular surfing spots, right?

My best guess is this would involve some way to attract them to the or near the spots you want to protect, how "baiting & burley"". Then some how kill them, thus removing the dominate animal. Now I am no Dave Attenborough,I would think that another dominate shark will move in,then we kill it etc etc etc..............

sounds like a plan........................

Cheers mate, Im glad someone understands. You know if hadnt happened where I surf alot I wouldnt be as upset as I am now. Ive surfed most of the spots down south where attacks and fatalties have happened, and Ive thought about it as Ive gotten ready looking at pumping surf.
This one has screwed with my head, talking to smicko yesterday really brought it home.

Btw I bought a 901 for summer, when there isnt any of these creeps around.

They had a shark expert on the radio yesterday and from what he was saying , and from SPs post that shark could be in south Africa or Qld by now . Not to say another 5 meter shark won't take it's place
Still I feel for you blokes in the west . If that was happening here I would be thinking twice of hitting the surf or letting my kids in the surf , especially when conditions aren't ideal .
Thought I read somewhere the west Australian government was spending a heap of money into research on different options such as shark repellers .Hopefully they find some answers .

Hopefully all these recent attacks is an abnormal run of events and there will be no more attacks for the next 20 years . But it would seem something , maybe increasing seal numbers , making the shark a protected species , more people in the water , is increasing contact between large sharks and people .

It is not that I am against "doggie" in any way.

There is no simple solution, combined knowledge from those that have regular dealings with these creatures can only help come up with some thing that works.

Knowledge....I have little about most things this included........

I once was told that sharks will not hang around if there is another dead shark in the water near by......perhaps someone with more info on this can let us know........

Same as Doggie. I thought we had a little safe haven north and the sharks where a southern problem.
What really affects me is my son is the same age and we have surfed in the vicinity so many times, quiet often on our own
I have been going there for 20 Plus years and consistently for 10 since I have a place in Lanno. Almost went there Saturday but luckily the reefs in town where good and went there instead.

Not sure whether there is a DEFINITIVE answer lads - we over here have a once in a lifetme event going on , and we have to live with that - it's mother nature saying something we are yet to understand or find a method to combat .
