I started way back with murry. later on got involved with dhd's boards.



then that craze/fad started to really kick in the 2010's.


dale was my 666 man. learnt a lot of him and gained a lot of info



shorties and a shaper, well im just running with what I can see in front of me atm.



and even shortboards the price a creeping up there.



give it another 5 years and most surfers will have at least one off shore board

Good question.

The term came mainly from Shane surfboards in Sydney early 70's. A very good portion of the Australian Industry learnt to shape making these.

Well actually the new Surftech Tufflites take a bunch more work than any PU/Poly so by definition of something 'popping out' it couldnt be any further from that.

They'll also sell for a higher price.

Agree on surftech but with the construction (as there is no real shaper other than the original design) they would be more of a pop out than any other type of construction?

They are still shaped by a shaper and mostly use Aku Shaper to pre-cut them also. Even fully moulded boards with specific moulded cores to the shape are still shaped to templates by shapers.

Perhaps the definition extends to any board not shaped directly by the designer as a one off design?

That vid is a classic That is GOLD, I saw a bloke doing that on the grass near our local carpark in his speedos,right next to the surf club kiosk,very entertaining for all the cafe latte crew,he had a bit of trouble doing it as well in the surf but I'm sure he'll get there sometime

mate I still trained Tuesday and this morning. actually doing wash leads with beau and ben- not what planned to do but old habits die hard.

looks like ill be keeping the starby 12,6 x 24 because there is no market for a board that narrow.


the main surfing and dwing board will a bullet 12'6 hopefully getting that late next week. im not paying out for it - just funds from the others sold. my board of choice for those to fit the surfing dw ing bill


however training/sup ping is going to be all anymore. if im tired or have to be at work Ill be giving it a miss

I have seen lots of poor shaped boards from so called reputable brands that have been ghost shaped/ finished here in Oz that are worse than the so call ed Asian poip out. I have no issue with boards out of Asia. I embrace technology. Bring it on I say. Why are most people still using the same technology as 50 yrs ago? Laziness and scared of change I reckon.

I'm actually looking forward to getting it written.

Before I start though... I need to be clear that I mean no disrespect to anyone in the Industry in any way shape or form. I was the grom who stopped in at every surfboard factory on my ride home from school. In those days it was Darby, Al Byrne, Madda, Hot Stuff as well as scouring the reject sticker bins at Rhema Graphics and hoping to see a Cheetah model or 2 at Print'N'Wear. My Mum sewed legropes for Connection who distributed sunnies and other cool surf stuff. She also worked with a girls surf brand, my old man surfed. Through Mum I got offered an apprenticeship at one of the cooler factories but as she knew what went on there was having none of it. As long as I can remember this is what I wanted to do for a job.

I have complete respect for the Aussie Industry and nobody wishes more than me that it would open its eyes and get in front of the game rather than what is now being way behind it. We taught others how to make racing cars and stayed driving the same ones.....

Anyway, work to do here. Wil try to find time to give my rundown soon.

Evening all... I have to say that while Mavericks is a beast of a wave, it also looks like an unpredictable and crappy one to me. On almost all the other great heavy waves of the world the risk is balanced out a bit by the possibility of getting the barrel of your life or something. (Not that i would be out there anyway) Here, you freeze your arse off and then get absolutely smashed. Still, I enjoyed this clip and Jamie's reaction when he watches film of his epic wipeout....
