The thumbing system was initially built to help moderators with an increasingly out of control Kitesurfing forum. It worked - it culled the idiots, and help moderators keep the forum civil.

Along came the SUP forums, where a few people abused the reds, but not to much great degree.

Then came the Longboard/Surfing forums.

Some members in these forums have used the red thumbs to a whole new level.

Due to feedback in here, we built some analytics to help us look deeper into the usage of thumbs.

And we were shocked at what we found.

I couldn't actually imagine that somebody would abuse the red-thumb system to such a degree as they did.

Specifically, using at least two logins this person dished out 2000+ red thumbs to 300+ individual logins, versus giving 45 green thumbs. Even after triple checking the numbers, I struggle to fathom this happened.

With that level of dissatisfaction, we're left wondering why they visit the forums at all?

These logins have been suspended, and changes are afoot to address things so this can never happen again.

No doubt there are people who say "discard the thumbs altogether", and this is a possibilty, and some people are eager for Seabreeze to become like Google & Facebook where they only have a +1 or "Like" button

Numerous other sites (i.e. YouTube, and most forums) have a +1 / -1 system to help administer things - too bad it was abused here, but we're now addressing this.

By all means, please throw your 2c in here, and be assured it will all go into the mix...

I think you should name them so we can see what the caliber of their posts are.
I am happy to keep the reds, you need some sort of balance for green but maybe limit a person to 1 a week or something so they must use them wisely.

I wonder if it is easy for you to create a "false neutral".

1 Green = 1 Green
0 Thumbs = 0 Thumbs
-1 Red = 0 Thumbs (false neutral - sort of a motorbike gearbox term)
-2 Red = -1 Red Thumbs

With this situation, random stalking from 1 account would have no net effect...
However, if 2 people dish out a red thumb, then the person may have deserved it anyway!!

Just a thought.

+1 agree with Legion here. I still maintain its a sick little EMO kid living in a bubble all he has in life is his redthumbs. Its so simple just get rid of them its all a little bit embarrassing really and not a conversation you would have in public

I have given some thought as to whether the facebook "like" (only) was of any benefit to the forum but I cant really find any really convincing argument for it - so for me its still "no thumbs at all please".
Having said though Id be happy to continue posting on the site if you did have "likes" ONLY.

Thanks Laurie for advising us that it was really just one bad egg in the tray. Now I think we should all just leave it behind and move onwards and upwards. No need for public re-criminations etc Laurie said the log-ons had been suspended so lets just forget about it. Its sad that society so often has to accommodate for the lowest common denominator - not like when its 6ft and heaving and only those that can paddle out get to play

Surely it should be obvious who it was given time - as they have been banned and won't be on here anymore. Who really cares anyway. Someone said this was a first world problem and i have to totally agree. It is pretty sad and funny that someone devoted so much energy to thumbing people though.

Monitor the situation. When I was a kid, groms got binned, bashed, beaten, teased, food thrown at them, etc, mostly by other older groms. Nowadays they'd get dad to sue you.

If I saw a grom getting picked on and it turned physical and serious then I'd intervene. If I saw a grom getting heckled and teased and he started crying, then I might console him, but inside I'd be thinking "**** me they make them soft these days".

Gidday fellas. On another site that I frequented until it got hacked and jacked, users had tags to identify who were regulars/ blow-ins/uber-members etc. Using this idea, you could identify who is a red thumb abuser, and we could pay-out on or ignore him/her/it.
