Square tail or Pin and why

The boys at Dukes would say square it gives you more push but I think you lose turning ability

I hate the squares on them - I put a rounded pin on mine and are stoked with it. I find it gives you more wave range and you can still get to the nose...... much more pleasant board to surf.

Bob told me that fin is not my friend so I now use a standard redline fin, more flex, the hatched was bucking me off.

i think these questions are above my experience as i probably couldnt tell the diff but thought i would add a cent anyway

Where did you find them Mr puppy

That Munoz at the end interests me. I've never seen his interpretation of a log.

And where on earth did that funny looking fin box come from

They have not been around for 40 years.

Is the board really that old or is it just an excellent repro

Was browsing around on Google Images , pumped in Mickey Munoz Surfboards - I cannot remember if she was up for sale or just view mate looking at her I'd say she's a survivor helped by some tender loving care over the years ... was just looking for some of the older singles styles

I think you guys are talking about two different square tails...

Log square tail is probably best suited to small waves, assisting tail lift and nose rides... And drop knee turns...

However a modern square tail with hard edges is a very loose option, but quite different to a square tail log.

The Blind Fold Test - any of us could pick the difference between any log and any modern hard railed board, no matter what tail shape on either...

I like squash square tails and round pins, for various reasons...

square tails with hatchets or pivot fins give better hold nose riding.
a bit of kick in the tail is also good and assists pivot turns.

this is my new model "pandanus"...we are still testing it before its released..it is a bit experimental in its design

traditional looking planshape which is why I went with the square tail but the bottom is pretty funky....heap of concave that runs back quite far towards the tail...with like a double roll on the rails to form the 50/50 rail...into a very moderate roll through the tail

its only early in its testing but so far it has been a pleasure to ride, provided you choose the right waves...I am convinced (for me anyway) that logs go great in waves that are smooth and running (point breaks or high tide beachy's) anything else they can be real dogs to ride.....I dont mind the way the squares turn but I think Mac is right...the pin would turn much smoother....shifting the concave back has highlighted the trimming capabilities of this board...out of the bottom turn...two steps forward and it just takes off and glides...a must for the complete longboard quiver

9'4"x23 1/2"x2 3/4" I am 68kgs and can kneel paddle it with ease

+ 1

Nice looking board there RG as per normal...you do make lovely looking toys. I agree with you re logs - thats why they are not too practical around these parts unless you have lots of room in the garage and funds to spare. If you lived northern NSW / SE Qld they would be a no a brainer I reckon. Or if you had regular access to that long long right not far from your digs.
