You would think living on the Gold Coast there would be a stack of longboard stores.
Well nope.

Theres one - how many do you need ? They sell Laguna Bay, G&S, and even that other M brand, as well as GSI and others. You are also only a short drive to Noosa Surfworks, Brett Munro, North Coast Surfboards and other iconic labels so you could always go to the source of the best longboards in the country. We are actually spoilt for choice as far as good longboards go I reckon. Its actually hard to beat a day trip to Noosa or Byron and doing the rounds of the shops and factories IMO.

Agree with 62mac, we used to have Australian Longboarder at Kirra...goooooone! We used to have Dukes at Mermaid...gooooone! (as Fatty Vautin would say).
This so-called two speed economy (read zero speed on the Gold Coast!) has also recently claimed World Surfers out on West Burleigh Road, Board Culture's shop out the front of the airport and now the Greenline SUP shop is closing at Mermaid Beach.
At least Board Culture's remaining shop at Mermaid Beach has taken over the baton from Dukes up that end of the coast - they support the local longboard clubs and now have a lot of new and used mals there and they can do McTavish and other customs like Dukes did. The shop guys are also longboarders so they speak our language, unlike the other shops!
But I am slightly envious of the guys at Byron and Noosa who seem to have a few more options than us on the Goldy at the moment, though I just can't justify the time and petrol money in getting there...

Its a bit odd considering how many people live there. Dick Van Straalen does a few longboards has anyone had any experience with them ?

DVS has a following similar to that of Geoff McCoy - in that they are fantastic boards for both quality and performance but they are not boards you see a lot of in the lineup. Generally people who ride their boards have been riding them forever and always will.
DVS does an "aussie allrounder" longboard which is kinda gunny and is fantastic in bigger waves. I have ridden one in biggish waves near Byron and the only other board that came close was Bob Ms original 8ft G2.

First up welcome noosa and a good opening post. What Greenline is closing wtf?
Billboard where are these boards stocked, you know you have bugger all chance of getting me off me MCT's.Yes Noosa and Byron are great getaway's,but working full time and using the time I do get off to surf as often as I can I wouldn't do the drive 3 hours north to pay a board.
My topic and a chat I've had with two industry people is there is a massive hole in the market as far as longboards go!I know what I'd be doing if I owned a surf store.

Billboard is right re DVS. I know Grant who organises the annual Alley Fish Fry has had several boards (somewhere between 8 & 10ft) from Dick and loves them. They are all hand shaped at Burleigh.
But the same applies to a lot of the experienced shapers, (be they DVS, McCoy, MR, MC, Rooster Dell, Wayne Deane, Billy Tolhurst, Gary Burden, Mctavish, etc) in that they all have their band of followers and rightly so.

Maybe so TB,but this place is ripe for the picking done the correct way!
Wheel of fortune, spend your money in the local area and that money will
be spent also in the local area, well sounds good anyway

Sounds like a good LB store in NZ and the GC could be a winner
Duke's was great,I could drop by have a chat order a board and my son
could go next door to Stu's and do the same, too easy!

Well 62mac, its not that bad. You can still drop the lad at Stuarts for his shorty and then either walk/drive half a km south to Board Culture or drive all the way down to by Byron (or up to Noosa).
Your choice and I think the GC economy needs as much money as it can get right now before more shops close.

BOARD CULTURE. I would strongly suggest we support these guys and let them know what we want and need as a longboard community because I am confident that if we dont support them, then the BIG players may just snuff out longboard retail choice completely. Just my personal thoughts.
Disclaimer - I have nothing at all to do with this shop.

Mate I am not involved at all with board culture but I know the owner, Mark, and he is I believe an honest, good guy who is going to try to offer as big a range of boards as he can and he has taken on Laguna Bay, G&S and I think McT and a whole host of other labels (I dont work for him so I dont know what brands)

I am actually NOT in the know about anything other than the fact that certain companies/people are****** the industry for the genuine guys who actually give a sh#t about the industry and surfers - its a f#ckin disgrace, so support people like Noosa Surfworks, McT (real ones) Munro, Classic, DVS and all the other great aussie labels. Do this by buying direct from the shaper or go and see Mark at board culture and say "get me a ..... " and help him to help us keep the longboard community strong on the goldy.
BTW - did you know miami longboards have finished ! Now that is an iconic goldy label gone forever because of ........... (dont need the grief) what a tragic loss to local surfing - I dont know anyone who hasnt owned or ridden a miami longboard - IMO the best value for money surfboards ever made.

Rant over sorry

Mark Sutton is the owner/manager (as far as I know) of board culture and he is a longboarder. I dont know him well but he comes across as open/honest/interested and passionate about logs and logging. He has been a supporter of burleigh longboard club for quite a while and I think he has been a pretty generous sponsor for them
I am not blowin sunshine up hisass because as I say I dont really know him or the shop intimately, but he's having a go and in the current climate thats gotta be applauded.

I here what you are saying mac but ,it takes me 45min to Byron from the airport , I bet you sit traffic longer than that and as was said before you are spoilt for choice when you get there Brett Munro top kiwi bloke .I've been in business here for twenty years, when I talk to people in the surf industry here I always come to the conclusion that Margins are not big enough. But I guess if there was aplace to do it the GC would have to be it , so what are you waiting for mac.The other thing Iwill add to that is you once talked about a coffee long board shop I think that idea's a winner
