Vic Hislop the Great White shark hunter said back in the 80s "If you protect the Great White now you're going to need protection yourselves in 30 years".Looks like he was not far off with his prediction.

Yes,he hated the things.I paid 5 bucks in the mid 80s to see the 19 footer he caught in MoretonBay.He toured it around and it was at the Easter show.Same shark was on permanent display up HervyBay until he closed down a few years ago.

I read his prediction when the ban on catching them came in 1988.

A few more bad years of deaths and the government's will surely reverse the decision.

I reckon if you have a white longboard at least 10 feet long with a red nose on it, any Noah is going to think twice, because you look at least big enough to put up a fight. Anything shorter, well, you've only got yourself to blame......

ditto. the thing was huge, he had it in a refrigerated truck.
the one he caught 3 years later at Phillip island was bigger.

So so many more people entering the ocean on different forms of craft and shark numbers growing like wild fire, as Cobra said more many more to come sadly. I was never bothered about them but after our attack and so many sightings and chat in the water it's freaked me

Vale Michael Tomson, gone at 66.
He and (especially) his cousin Shaun were in so many of the mags and movies when I was a teen.

I think Michael Thomson was in Free Ride a bit if I remember right . Great flick . Saw it at Nelson Bay cinema when on holidays up there in the 70's . Seeing surf movies like that on the big screen was unreal .

I'm a bit torn by this. I'm scared shaitless of sharks, but a few years ago got involved in Sea Shepherd and Australian Wildlife Conservency.
I've now come to the point that "I want to go surfing" is not a good reason enough to cull or kill sharks.
The daughters in their early 20's surf with no fear, maybe it is just as we get old we become more aware of our mortality.
I don't know what the answer is

I not saying a cull is needed, do sharks come on land and hunt fishermen but there is going to be more attacks due to two factors. More sharks and more humans entering the ocean, when two tribes collide there is only one winner.

Sadly legend surf photographer Martin Tullemans has passed away.

From the paper today
Tributes are flowing for one of the world's greatest surfing photographers, Martin Tullemans, who has passed away on the Gold Coast.Tullemans, 68, died in Tweed Heads Hospital after a long battle with ill health. He was lauded as one of the finest in his craft, capturing some of surfing's most iconic images which ran in magazines worldwide. One of surfing's most colourful characters, Tullemans also inspired a generation of fellow lensmen before the digital revolution. "Sadly Martin Tullemans has passed away this morning," his sister Mary Shaw posted on Facebook on Tuesday. "Loved by many. A beautiful humorous man who brightened manys' day. "His surfing images recorded the 70s to 2000 , from Kirra to Hawaii succinctly." Ms Shaw said there would be a ocean memorial for her brother at 7am on December 27 in front of the Coolangatta Surf Club.

Oops. Had a few beers while reading here and elsewhere about Greenroom, AKA Greenie. Then a couple of days later I went to log back in and saw that I'd changed my username from Greeney.

I think i thought, "hey, there's only one Greenie, Greeney." Can't quite recall.

Anyway, vale Greenroom. He seemed like a wonderful fella who lived live to the full. Much loved.

With that in mind, here's a Raymond Carver poem, written when he knew he was not long for this world...

'Late Fragment'
And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.
