232 fatalities In how many years?

Where do these stats come from?

What about the presumed drowned stats?...No body was found??? Couldn't have got eaten could they?

232 in 225 years that's how long ago (1791) they started keeping records on shark attacks, earliest records will be variable im sure depending on reporting im sure, but thats all we have so far, google it dude, or better still go through the countless records reports and data that James Cook Uni , UWA and UNi of Tassie have, theres a heap of well documented information out there. its interesting stuff.

SO now presumed drowned is considered a shark fatality? Because no body was found ?Ahh OK then. Interesting outlook, but to those unfamiliar with marine biology i guess understandable to look at that way.

So take that for a minute, I've no idea how many people are presumed drowned with no body identified, and if no body found how they've been presumed drowned, hell they could be anywhere, but lets just say there were another 200 of them in the last 225 years, that would be just over how many Australians have been killed on our Roads from January to now. Its still a comparison of Hundreds over hundreds of years to Hundreds over a few months.

Seriously dude, do some research, either way it will cement your view one way or the other but at least it will be backed by useful information and data regardless of which way your opinion settles.

Really hope Ben recovers quickly and gets back into the line up one day in the not too distant and sounds like all the local crew are pretty rattled for obvious reasons so wishing 'em all back in to the water and again big "RESPECT" to those that saved his life.

Well that's one thing we can agree on at least & at this point in time the most important one.

Too right Mick
Regardless of Points of view Ben's well being and speedy recovery is THE most important thing.

That's just not fair, surviving for so long and then to finally pass away, he must have been very strong

"232 in 225 years that's how long ago (1791) they started keeping records on shark attacks'

DUUUUUUUDE, do your research......GOOGLE it

Stories of undocumented stuff does not rate

1837, near the mouth of the Macleay river is the first recorded fatality. He had a name, it wasn't a story.

But a genuine discussion thread could help. Not just the same oil rubbish, but other real options, like earlier/better warnings. Beach signs for people who don't do twitter. Even a contact should have been made to the local clubs so they could have handled the notification of surfers.

Also why not have the WA rescue chopper having blood onboard, like NSW? A early blood transfusion could have made all the difference. The chopper was on site before the ambulance, blood on board could have made the difference. It has been proven so In NSW recently.

Better beach locations. The ambo got lost. Couldn't find the beach, surely a quicker result could have helped?

I cant help but feel Ben (and his local surfing community) was let down by the system or lack of one in this case. Yes he was bitten by a shark, but the end result/priority to go and kill a few sharks, was not ever going to help Ben.

Talk is needed, ideas and options need to be discussed to help. Why not on a surfing forum

Ben sounded like an absolute ripper and a nice guy. R.I.P mate
