I think quads .. if you are a average surfer on any board, a quad will help your surfing imo.

If you ride single fin, you will prefer a quad

If you ride a midlenth you will prefer it as a quad

Why do your knees hurt looking at a quad mac?

Guess it depends what you call performance?
Their longboards after all, if you don't trim them and move around then you are hardly performing. If anything you are an underperforming shortboarder

So singles I guess could be the most performance orientated fin in a way.

Personally I think It has more to do with the bloke riding it
then the fin. Eg Joel Tudor on a single vs 99.999999 % of the bloke that ride quads

Agree sorta sp... tudor would make us all look stupid

My thoughts on quads and longer boards. (Swellnet or somebody wrote something about kooks and had a piece on quads that us close to my thoughts)

I don't like thrusters on my mids. I find you have to be a good surfer to benefit from three fins. As in you have to keep the board constantly moving to get a benefit out of it

With such a long rail i find it a pain to pump the board, compared to using that added rail to beat sections and find it a smoother (easier) ride.

I like a single more than three fins on a mid, yet a quad still gives me that nice stability, I don't have to pump to stay on the wave, I can't surf the pocket on a mid or longboard anyway so the ability to hit the lip at 12 o'clock does not even matter, so three fins is wasted. I prefer a flatter board and the ability to pop up anywhere, and a quad allows bad foot placement, three fins dont

this is where my dilemma, and wanting to experiment comes into play.

My hp longboard is nuts as a thruster, but i prefer the way maca set it up for me . Two big fins and a small trailer (not a effing twin with a trailer) over the three fins being the same size

I'm having typing fatigue.. need a break

Twin plus one

I'm the opposite, swap quad for 2+1 and you could change your post for my preference.
The only thing I really like quads in are fishes. In mids and eggs I find them to down the line, where as a 2+1 is easier to turn and control.. Probably a bit of personal preference.

Only time i would change is of the wave was a full wedge a-frame and a quad will shoot you out of the shoulder. Two plus one lol

Speaking of performance mals, I owned a Classic Malibu Quad for about 4 years.

Full on performance mal with the rocker, rails and shape - only thing is that I am not a full performance surfer - probably didn't get the best out of it but loved the glide of it once I got it dialled .

Sooo much speed for so little effort - I just struggled to get it looser on the turns.

It loved bigger sucky waves and steep faces as well as long waves were you had room to wind it up to top speed, had so much grip in the face it was ridiculous, it was my go to for heavy beach breaks.

Fell out of love with it when it came to wanting to cruise and try my hand at the trad side of things, at the end of the day you cant have it all

Enjoying the trim, glide and absorbant nature of a single fin 9'3 at the moment, have actually had it in good waves and it takes a bit to get the technique right but once I did it was just so much bloody fun, staying close to the power is a buzz, throw in some size on the wave and it is amplified 10x.

Ok Im with you now, and I agree two larger style fins as in a twin fin set up but with a smaller trailer therefore making it a thruster with two larger fins and a smaller third fin is really good, on a side note quads suck for your average beachy and if you surf points its got to be solid for quads to come into their own, more fin area means more drive, hold and carvier turns, anyone that says quads are looser must be surfing undersized fins, why do all the XXL wave surfers ride quads.

My go to longboard is surfed as a single... because that's how I like it

You are tripping. Have you seen how small the fins are on tow boards? They are tiny (I will take a pic of some)
Why do so many of short board groveller come as quads?

Big wave surfers like stability and speed

On a beachie, why would I go quads over a single fin on a performance mal? Just curious, as I am currently riding an 8ft quad mid-length 8ft and have been wondering about a 9'5 quad Tolhurst.

I'm not talking tow boards I'm talking paddle in big waves. Tow boards have lead inserts to hold them in so they can ride shorter. Paddle in are quad guns and fins arnt tiny by any measure and the reason grovellers have quads is they are generally high volume short in length hence less rail line and wider tails and I haven't tripped since the 80s

What I'm trying to understand is that you are telling me a paddle in gun for surfing monstrous waves is the same as a quad on a longboard surfing small waves

And i will go with nick Carroll on fins. The wider the tail, the bigger the fin, otherwise surf the smallest fin you can

I did not say quads are looser, you need to read what I said about in the pocket and blah blah from earlier
