thanks for the vote of confidence fellas. I love it how serious this room and no one ever takes the p*ss - just cold hard facts at all times

In no particular order.......

Bert Burger - the legend for sharing his compsand knowledge
Josh Dowling - unbelievable use of technology and art
Greg Brown - one of the best boards I ever owned - travelled o/s with me for many yrs and never let me down
Nev - I love my sweet potato and several of his other designs (brought BB mainstream)
Wayne Parkes - kiwi legend shaper. Made me many a fine board in my previous life as a kiwi resident
Goddard - I know its 6 and I am yet to have one of his but for the last 18 mths I have lustered after his creations more than anyones Plus how could I leave any of the others out!

Fantastic topic.

Murray Bourton - mentor, way too many boards to mention. Best 6'2 ever. Learnt more from him than from any one else ever. Great man, stood by me 100% through the hardest time in my life so far.

Simon Anderson - best 6'5 pin tail ever. Legend on so many levels. This board was handshaped with me in the bay start to finish. Must get an award for telling the same story so many times. "I seen a guy coming out of the surf at narrabeen with a little fin at the back, I said what does that do Frank etc etc"

Dan McDonald - innovative young guy, loves technology, can handshape, shapes everything from amazing retro fish and single fins to modern high performance epoxy carbon, bamboo laminates etc etc. Also one of the best glassers and sanders you can find.

Kym Thompson - trail blazer, probably had more influence on the entire industry than any other shaper in history. Big call but when you are the guy building the technology for the biggest brands in the biggest factory in the world you understand.
Was also a great surfer and started the careers of many great shapers in Torquay.

Maurice Cole - tortured genius. 15 years in front of most.

Ridden or owned a couple of each of mine.....for me it's not just based on shape either. The care taken in glassing and finishing the boards as well as input for a custom and the consistency of good boards from these shapers...but that's just me.

I have not owned a few of mine.....my neighbour has had a BB for the last 3 yrs so I feel like I almost own it - we surf together most of the time and I also fix it for him.....Josh Dowlings - I am yet to own one and can not see it happening for a while but whenever I see one in real life I make sure I go and chat to the owner whilst lusting after it and trying to hide the bloodflow. I want to own one but too many other items are in front of it on my shopping list.

Kym started and owned Watercooled surfboards in Torquay and is featured in the Surf Museum. As Victorian Champion and big wave charger. He ran his business using for the time cutting edge technologies like Carbon and Kevlar etc years before most had heard of it.

He also shaped Sailboards and at the advent of Cobra Sailboards shaped many of their original designs for them in Thailand.

He then went on to relocate to Thailand with the vision of creating a quality outsourcing (Cobra had already revolutionised Windsurfing with their production process and technologies) option for surfboard businesses to produce large orders and target global markets like Japan etc.

I won't mention brands as some you may not even know are made in Thailand but will say that he is the technical guy that has put the production of the boards (Surf and SUP) to practice that have layed the foundations of market acceptance for nearly all technology brands to date.

No doubt this will be argued by some that a shaper that validated the production of surfboards in Asia has been influential to the market and that's fine but for those that know Kym know what he has contributed to the industry as a whole.

Kym in 1971 at Bells pre legropes.

Totally agree but another West Aussie name from the past is Bruce Montgomery

Haven't spoken to him in years and years and I'm told he now does mostly long boards What a waist
