What are they exactly for? Longboards catch waves further out than you, shortboards maneuver better. Whats the point in having them in the lineup if either way they will be outgunned? Isn't it better having either as they will more or less cover the conditions especially if you throw a fish in the works? Are there conditions that only best suit a mini mal?

*Wave starved with the flu right now. Hope you lads are getting some decent surf!

You're right newy, mini mals do nothing and are nothing, the only time they're of any value is when a mini person is riding the mini board.

All the different incarnations of short to mid length boards, like fishes, eggs, so-on and so-forth do it all so much better than a scaled down longboard.

I dug it back in the day when there were eight feet mal comps. Some of the most incredible surfing I have ever seen was Glen Winton on an eight feet quad winning the Claude West shootout. Without letting my ego bloat, I also rate the tube I got in the 93 or so Steel City comp final. Of course Sharpie on this forum still beat me ripping on the shoulder.

An 8fter can be a 1 board quiver. I rate em.

They are also good for longboarders who's surf alot of beachies.

In the end, unless your Kelly, it doesn't matter want your riding as long as your catching waves.

Agree,

An eight footer does make a good one board quiver. All the good ones I owned went in anything from one to six feet waves. Unfortunately though, I get board riding one board too long.

ahhhh looks like theres a niche for these boards. Honestly though, mini mals over here are only ever used by beginners. I have not seen even one person who rips on them. They float their way along the white water or out the back when it's small. My pop out mini mal feels like surfing a brick. Going to try it as a twin fin next time and hopefully it will change my view on this mid length board...

Bang on

However, just the term mini mal makes me sick.Sorry but that's just wrong.8 foot boards are sweet for a shortboarder on a small lazy day but for a longboarder on a big day they rock.Go figure

Mini mals are like fun boards for beginners backpackers Byron Bay

you pretty much summed it up daneli. i would love to ride more shorty more, but i ride my minimal about 60% of the time. i do think if i could only own 1 board i think the mini mal would be it. catches nearly as many waves as my log, much easier to handle getting out in the beachies, its way more manoeuvrable than a 9ftr yet i can still trim and almost stay at the snotty end. to me a winner unless your a big fat prick

Nothing wrong with an 8. Much less swing weight than a 9, still paddles, turns
& can cross step on them.

Personally I think mini-mals are crap. Yep. They do not have the paddle of a longer board and do not have the looseness of a shorter board. They are a hybrid designed for the learner - normally 7'3 to 7'6" in length have a round nose and generally a wide fat tail area. I think they are a joke. They are predominately sold for learners and are normally designed as such. A whaste of space. Daneli - yours is not what I would call a mini-mal - more a mid length as others have pointed out. A beautiful board by the look of it. Mini-mals are a pain in the asse to paddle out as you can not duck dive them and so you have all the disadvantages of the mal but none of the upside characteristics. They are probably fine for small glassy soft bachies or points but if you had to have one board I would think there are several other options I would prefer over one of them. If you have a quiver then there is no need to even consider owning one...........

Hey boys i went for a paddle with the wife on our 666s today when suddenly the wife said that magic word... WHALE..... i looked over to see this large beautiful creature 400m to my left. i took off out the back i was about 100m past the shark drums and i got inside 200m from it, i'm still buzzing.
the sad thing is we had a new born Humpback calf washed up on our beach this week hope its not mum

hey don't bring me into it

my 2 cents- no such thing as mini mal, it's a mal or its not a mal

and the bag only gets worn dw ing, better then a back pack. keeps a lower centre of gravity compared to a back pack.

i certainly don't go to the shopping centres wearing it. and i don't own crocs either before some smart arse gets in on it.

as a matter of fact- i'm the coolest guy around. your lucky to have me

Mini mals or mid lenghts or whatever you want to call them are very valid surf design...for the short boarder they are big enough to feel like riding a longboard and for a longboarder they will feel like a shortboard when comming off a nine plus..without much adjustment to nose and tail differences...and why are they even pigeon holed?...mals are only determined mals if they are over nine feet right?...thats because of bloody contests....has to be over nine...so all mals are over nine!...I'm short and weigh 68kgs...some times over nine is a very big board...this ones the M8...and at times it can be your best M8
