My 11' came with similar damage out of the box. I took a section of 'rail tape' and placed that over the damage, assuming I'll get it fixed one day.... maybe I will, maybe I wont?
I've also used SolaRez and a different variation on other boards - and never had an issue.
Here's my take, for what it's worth: If it's minor damage, solarez will definitely do the job, but if you plan on a professional repair later, they've got to then remove said solarez. A bit of rail tape (or Puka Patch, which is pretty much the same thing) will protect from water ingress, and be easier for the professional to deal with down the track. That said, you've then got to be Ok with there being a (clear) tape patch on the board.
My surf bucket - along with all kinds of accumulated crap - has both a tube of solarez and a collection of patches in the bottom, somewhere.
Re: fins. The legend I bought my 10'6" from tried numerous set ups and settled on the 9" 4A. I also tried numerous set ups, inc the fins off my 11', but also settled on the 9" 4A - even in the same spot where the seller used it.
