I know I traded a lot of them when I worked in the shops. All said the same thing, caught waves easy but would not settle on the face or in the pocket.

Modern adaptations of the design overcome this with deep vee and quad such as Sweet Potato.

Some love them, some not so much.

This is a Sweet Potato.

I have a 6'4 which is too big for me, should have gone 6'0. They are as flat as an ironing board, 3 1/2 inches thick, wider than my gut and goes like the clappers. I only like it up to 2 or 3 ft at high tide but a lot of fun.

Once, I did do a McCoy nugget after a big night.

Same as a Jim Beam or Jack Daniels nugget - interesting, but certainly not a Guiness grogan that's for sure.

I love my Sweet Potato but it has a very limited wave range. Once it gets overhead its very useable. I have the 5'10" model but reckon I could go to 5'6" easily.

I have ridden a McCoy nugget - not as long as that one but its was fun not great. II think they serve a great purpose - they have loads of volume so you can go a lot shorter on them than you probably think. They are not a high performance board but you will catch loads of waves on them and they paddle like a dream. More fun than a mini mal in my opinion.

Hi ASEA, I have some mates that love the Nuggets as they are such a high volume board and gets the wave count up on boards that are shorter and offer more SB performance. They have a lot of area and foam in the tail and I think suit a back foot surfer.

As CMC says, shorter high volume baords have come along way and there are other boards out there that offer high volume short boards that I prefer. Whilst I do not like buying imports, I am a fan of Firewire for high volume short boards. I have a 7'2 that catches waves as easy as my 9'2 Munro but is much more fun to surf, and fits easily in my work car for sneaky sessions. It is now my go to board and I have just order a 6'11. I have heard Michael Cundith is another shaper that works with high volume but I don't have any info on his boards.

AC - I have surfed a 6.6 / 7.6 / 7.11 and 8.2 Nuggets and really loved the 2 bigger ones. I found the shorter lengths way too corky for their size, but they are all really easy boards to surf and paddle and really are sooo much fun. All nuggets thrive in shlt surf and are incredibly forgiving. The 7.11 I surfed in punchy conditions at Bondi and it was an absolute gem.

AC - I surfed the 7.3 7S PU at 113kg - now on the 7.3 7S Epoxy and almost find it too buoyant - having said that - the paddling is SO very good - I got a bag of waist high waves on it today...(and when I saw the surf I was p!ssed I hadn't brought the 9.1 - but no problem with the 7S).
