Hey all..

Well the time has come I think ive decided I need to switch from a shortboard to a longboard.. mostly due to my age.. Im 31.. but I cant paddle a shortboard for hours I end like I used to be able to lol..

What sort of longboard would you recomend? ive been riding a 6'2" and just lately been riding my 6'4" fish to ease into the transition haha

Cheers

Hi mate and welcome, some may say get a 8 footer,no problem but you will be sitting on your own between the longboarders and the shortboarders closer to shore imo.

Go for a 901 HP your still young

Have you thought about a high volume shortboard? Something like a webber Minifish, just one example.

But if you're going a LB as mac said a HP 9ftr is probably the best bet.

What type of waves do you surf?

Like I said mate, I have a 6'4" fish.. about 21 X 3" Paddles really well..

But yeah thats the other reason I want to change.. I usually surf around the 3ft.. big fat waves down here on the surf coast.. Bells, Drainos, Pt Danger.. I see a lot of longboarders out, more than shortboarders actually.. The shortboarders tend to goto winki, steps, boobs and 13th... I prefer the big fat reef breaks, but usually these involve a long paddle, and the fat waves require a lot of work to stay on the wave, so you can see why I want the change.. I have a cheap ****ty old 7'2", with hardly any rocker and it drives me mad.. Its the poly something, not fibreglass to so if its a bit choppy it slaps the chop..

Im probably not looking as big as 9ft.. maybe the 8ft range.. I want plenty of rocker, and something that will turn well (as well as longboards do anyway lol)

Cheers

Howie.

At 34yo and after having nearly a year off after breaking my back and losing a lot of fitness and strength I went for a custom 8ft hybrid thingy... before that I had been surfing 6'8" performance SB.

At 45yo and a lot heavier I surf a 7'3" big blokes fish and a 9'1" HP McT Fireball Evo. Both let me onto fat waves... the fish has 53lt and the LB 66lt volume.

Depends upon how you want to surf the wave you want to surf... I still like to chuck the fish around a bit - but enjoy the LB on the smaller days.

As has been said many times - whatever keeps you catching waves and makes you smile.

And yes, 8 foot is a bit of an in between length...

But I still like my 8'0 and 8'6 guns. Bigger than normal short board guns, so you can catch more waves, but they are still very maneuverable ! (Gosh that's a hard word to spell! )

PS - Welcome Howie !
