Had an 8'2"x21 1/2"x3 1/8 short board shape made from a mini mal blank. caught waves easily and surfed really well, including taking late drops successfully.

Also had a 10' mal with a pointy nose which did not surf as well. Funnily enough it didn't have enough volume!?

Surfed a 12' SUP ( :) ) when I was frustrated with trying to stand and paddle so I got rid of the paddle.
It made the longest, slowest, bottom turn, and frightened the f*ck out of the short boarders outside me.
Had a ball. :)

I don't see any reason why a purposely shaped overgrown short board will not work.

Geoff Mccoy has been doing big nuggets for years. My 8'2" is 21 3/4 wide, relatively narrow nose, 17 1/2 tail, probably 70 odd litres, outpaddles my 9'6"
surftech longoard. Surfs only from the tail.
