Omg, was soooooooo good... The hail storm and snow to 200mtrs did not deter and we were greeted with bag loads of shoulder to head high plus perfect peelers running about 200-300+mtrs rolling through and about 8 guys out, must confess, I surfed like a total muppet... Buuuuuut, surfed till dark and then THE best hot shower and coffee ever!!! Meanwhile, I can hear her grinding away ready for tomorrow morning sunrise session, straight of the back porch... so stoked

last week the best week of surf for a long , long time but shat it was cold on Friday , hour and a half out in booties , gloves , heated vest , had to get out when the hands were too numb to hold the paddle , but man it was fun . Story in the local paper

NORTH-WEST surfers took advantage of the storm yesterday, risking the extreme weather conditions to catch a wave.Former The Advocate photographer Dale Cumming braved the wind and rain, which hit the entire North-West region yesterday, to take some photos of young surfer Zak Grey.Mr Cumming took the photos from the end of the West Beach boardwalk and said the wind proved challenging, but he knew he would come away with some interesting images."You have to have a storm like that, to get waves of that size," he said."I knew that in those conditions there would be a few people in the water."The surfer Zak Grey, 23, is from Marrawah.Mr Grey, who is completing a carpentry apprenticeship in Burnie, was excited about the arrival of the storm."I certainly think about surfing more than carpentry," he said.The West-Coast surfer said yesterday's waves were an anomaly in Burnie.
"There was a lot of swell yesterday. In Marrawah we usually get pretty consistent swell, whereas up here its quite an event to get a storm like that," he said."I don't surf up here that often, so I saw it as a good opportunity."Despite the rough conditions, Mr Grey was itching to get his board in the water."The wind was a little bit unpleasant and the storm was quite ferocious, but as a surfer you take those risks," he said."I knew what to expect. I've been surfing since I was about six, and you've got to be well prepared, especially in winter."Mr Grey said the temperature of the water and the ferocity of the storm could never hold him back from good surf."It was quite wild out there, but that was a bit of a novelty, surfing among the storm. It added to the excitement," he said.

Yeah Mays on the high tide can be nasty, its quite a critical long barrel that one and a total biatch getting in/out... Laudy is more the old school LB wave mind you, there were a few kegs on friday...
and well, we all know these waves in tas and if you make it down and its working, come share dude, its a pretty good vibe out there most times... and would be pretty crazy for me to be all localist when i despise patriotism, as far as i'm concerned we're all short term visitors to old mother earth

can say I have experienced a bit of localism down south in some of the more popular spots . Had to laugh .
But elsewhere most times , especially in winter its just nice to see another face in the water
mate, thats not localism, i've only lived here a few years and never encountered any of that, thats anti-sup, the sup guys down here are really doing your cause a lot of damage. there's a place in the water for all craft and i know 2 sup guys down here that are fine, but most of them are guys with no experience who head into the lineup with no idea, no etiquette and they're bloody dangerous on those outta control an uncoordinated big craft... gotta say, they sit even below boog boarders, surf ski's, etc etc down here

Not saying it doesn't happen but it happens on all surfcraft ,IMO unfortunately the blokes on the SUPs stand out more because of just that they are standing up .( or at least trying to )

Totally agree mate, its the rider not the craft. the problem with the SUP is it makes it easier for peeps with no water experience to enter the lineup and thats where the issues arise. you just cant go from zero to paddling out on a traditional stick and start snaking and dropping in, it takes time to learn but you can on a SUP cos its pretty easy. I mean last week me and one of my mates were surfing this isolated little peak at mid clifton, then 3 SUP paddled and sat out the back and did not let one wave through, so we moved up the beach to another peak AND THEY FOLLOWED US, we were like WTF!!! so we went back, and they bloody followed us again, so we just got out... truly truly assholes
anyway, the vibe out here at laudy is ripper... scored a few waist high peelers this morn with 2 others and was super fun and a great crew

i'm screwed then, ride a fish, mid length & sup
if you having trouble with greedy beginner sups in the water, have a freindly word with them, its up to all of us to educate the new guys till they get to know the rules
i've only every copped abuse in the water once and that was from a particular group of grumpy old fun police longboarders that hunt in a pack

agree that would p.ss you off , come to the northwest the SUP crew here is much more laid back . Personally I make a point of letting some waves go through if there are others around . Though if I leave them go and they sit and watch them roll through its game on
