What did Rod recommend re: fins?
I run my 11' and 12' Munoz's with a 7.5" centre with side bites. Of all my 2+1 set ups, those two have the smallest centre fins... That said, somewhat completely different board to yours, from the pic. Long story short, don't hesitate to try a smaller centre fin.
I posted the board on my Instagram (all 40 followers) with a little "Anyone have any idea where to put the fins?"
Rod very kindly rang with a few ideas. I had an already put it roughly where Inthought it looked right in relation to the side bites and tail. He had a more objective method of measuring a starting point and it turns out I was only 1/4 of an inch of his recommended starting point.
Yep, in my research I have always been surprised by how small to go in fins on these big boards.
I ride a lot of 2+1 set ups and single fins. In general, I really like the Wayne Lynch 7.5 fin and 3.25 side bites, so a really big drivey 7.5 fin. I have played a fair bit with fins, but I have tended to be a set and forget sort of guy once I find a compromise I like.
Rod supplied a few different fins with the board. Three center fins - a 4.5-ish fin from Futures which is similar to the Performer, but isn't the Performer; a 6.5 True Ames Bonzer, and a 7 FCS II Connect. He also supplied Ryan Lovelace quads as Side bites. Rod really felt I will mix and match the fins when it comes to wave size.
My initial set up will be the Lovelace fins at the front and the Bonzer set a bit further back than I normally would on a 2+1.
I'm sure it will take a bit of dialling in as the board is a different type of board to all my others, plus it is 2' longer than anything else I have surfed.
I expect come winter I may be using the 7' as a single fin when we have proper little glider runners, but time will tell.
