Mate.
This may sound weird but if you want to try something different get a body board and fins/flippers and do that for 6 months.
This will build your confidence up in the water without having to worry about duck diving a tanker, you will get a better feel of where to sit, what to paddle for, where the power of a wave is and how to use that power.
You will ride across the wave instead of taking off on a wave and going strait for the beach.
You will also learn quicker how to generate speed on a wave and slow your self down using your body weight.
Then after 6 months or so you can use everything you learn from bodyboarding and use it on your Surfboard. ( then you just have to worry about getting to your feet)
Everything else should seem a little bit easier by then.
This is how many grommets and older people start out.
OK I have had my rant and put my 2 cents in.
What ever you do good luck and stick with it.

McHenry mate besides doing all of the above, fitness mate, fitness, the more you surf and get paddle fit the easier it is to get out also. My opinion is Eskimo roll making sure your body is at 90% to your board like an anchor then after the wave has passed gun it, paddle like a MF until the next one hits. You can rest when you are out the back. So you are a Cannuck do you follow the NHL? All the best mate with your surfing mate, it is one enjoyable addictive pastime.

Of course, I follow the NHL! Toronto Maple Leafs are my team. Do you follow the NHL. IT became apparent that paddle fitness is the way to go. Unfortunately I can only get out once a week??

Any tips to build up paddle fitness without surfing ??

Yes mate an NHL fan. I used to follow the Kings and even had a Gretsky jersey years ago, but now I just like to watch any team. Mate in regards paddle fitness in my opinion you can do gym, pushups, whatever, but getting out there and paddling is really the only thing that works. Just try and stay out as long as you can or go twice in the one day maybe. It doesn't take long to loose your surf fitness also so you have to go all year round if you can. I have had mates who are super fit who don't surf and try it out and are buggered in about 30-40 mins, so it isn't easy.
