Ok, I know I may get crucified with this post but I dont mind. As a total beginner, I have a real hard time getting out past the break. Im ok if the timing is right but what do you do when your in the wrong place at the wrong time. My board is about 8 feet, wide, thick and I can not duck dive the thing. So is the old eskimo roll that effective or do I just get off and hold the leash at the tail and cop it on my head??

A little help from the Longboarding pros would really help.

No Pro here, its all about timing and reading the conditions,If I get caught I will put one arm around the nose (never the tail) and cop it on the head, wait for the waves to go then return to prone and paddle like a demon.

PS,you have gone way up the order with those bikes you've posted.

Ah thanks, I have a love for old vintage beach cruisers. Just seemed a good fit to bring them with me when I moved here from Canada seeing as you have proper beaches.

Im going out on Sunday I will take some time to read the ocean, this surfing thing is hard stuff. Its tough to learn surfing when you havent grown up around the ocean and have a general background of it, but I love it and get out as much as I can.

Mate pull up to your spot and watch the good guys for 30 mins take notice of where they paddle out and also after they catch a wave, how and where they paddle back out.Watch surf movies it all helps.

McHenry, look for rips along the beach to take you out. It's simple, the waves bring the water in and the rips take it out (Spot the ex clubby). Rips are generally adjacent to where waves are breaking.
Before you jump in observe where other surfers are paddling out. A good rip will give you a easy paddle out.

Mitch Buchanan played by the Hoff was a farkin embarrassment. Does anybody recall that Baywatch episode with the Uncle Toby's ironmen.
The last scene shows Hendy running up the beach and one Sheila says "They're are not just men, they are ironmen". The Hoff had the worst running style. He was better in the Knight Rider.
Doggie, Garcia has right of way whoever he is.

Sounds like you need a paddle, then you don't need to worry about duckdiving you can just bail your supertanker and if any of the victims are still moving in the aftermath then you have the paddle to put them out of their misery.

edit* Should've read through the entire thread before lightheartedly taking the pi$$. Didn't realise that this was yet another one that had gone pearshaped, no offence intended.
And pull your heads in you red thumbing, whinging, whining bitches. It's like a fkn girls school on here sometimes and no that isn't directed at the greenroom, just SB in general.

Don't be disheartened mate, it just takes persistance and practice. I'll admit, when I started out, I sat more times on the beach out of breath than making it out the back. My first few lessons, I didn't even stand up.

It's been a few years and definately alot of advice and help from the guys in this forums and now things have changed. The tips from guys on this forum, refines your skills while the rest has to be learnt on the beach. I use to paddle blindly right into the impact zone and not know whats going on. It helps to turn up to your break and just wait a few minutes to relax and scope the beach. You can pick up where guys are paddling out and how they do it. On a longboard admittedly it is harder but it's made up by the fact you end up catching more waves than most and dominating the lineup. Furthermore have a rest before paddling in gives your sunscreen time to settle instead of burning a scar through your neck by melting your wetty

I remember when I was on bigger boards, my best advice was simply to paddle. The arms will get a work out with every wave and recovery after an eskimo role but once you get out the back you got all the time to rest and relax. Besides using a rip, or rocky point to get you out the back easier, there isn't much really I think that'd help.

For more powerful waves try slipping off the board, holding the nose, with the cross section of the board held vertical. i.e if you are on the left side of the board, hold the right side up above the left side. It takes all the impact out of the wave. When you have the board flat it has the full width to collect the waves energy, but if the board is edge on it only has 2 1/2- 3 inches which is sweet F.A.
Your body is under the impact of the wave, so you take it on the shoulders and head.

If it is really powerful, turn around and face the beach, and sit on the tail.

If you are under the lip when it thumps ya, you need to rethink your approach.

If these don't work, throw the bugger and clean out the short boarders.

Thanks boys, I really appreciate all the help. I will be more patient and have a look at what everyone else is doing before I bound in. Will also try and turn my super tanker when I am going to cop a wave and try to get my paddle fitness up.

TB it's the fact that it's 8 feet wide that makes it a supertanker.
