It took me almost an hour of sanding to make it fit.

The pin was no problem but the front was thicker than the rear by maybe 0.5 mm.

It was as if the fin box should have been a V shape longitudinally.

Definitely not from a normal board.

I still may give it a go just for shiats and giggles.

back on track....have u tried that fin yet obct, i cant see why it wouldn`t work on a mal...might hum a bit, but thats easily fixed,

No, didn't go out today, I'll have a look tomorrow morning and maybe give it a go then.

Got the normal fin in at the moment.

What makes them hum?

Is it because they are loose?

I remember having a board with a Lexan star fin in many years ago and had that phenomenon of having the fin hum really loudly when I was dropping fast down a wave face.

I actually thought it was pretty cool

BTW, what ever happened to the star fin? Are they still around?

lol, i`ve only come across it with normal single fins, they usually hum if there`s small lump of resin or some crap on them,a quick sand fixes it, just looking at the shape of it made me think that, but now i`m sorta hoping it does....vrooooooooom. haha

haven`t seen a star for years,,thought you blokes would have one stashed though

Hi obct, yes they are still around I was given one a couple of months ago from Cheyne Horan nice guy he even signed it for me, he sells them and simply sticks a label on it and posts it without wrapping.I haven't used it and think it will sit on the trophy cabinet. He told me he was working on some new designs that will be out soon.
Many years ago I had the rear star on my thruster, until I leant it to a mate and he had his car stolen and that was that.

didn't go in today, too windy.

Apart from the problem of getting the board to and from the water, when the wind gets under a very big, but relatively light board like mine, all sorts of weird stuff happens.

I'll try again tomorrow.

I finally got the chance to give it a go this arvo.

Collaroy had some waist high sets coming through with a reasonable amount of regularity for me to make a few comparisons. The good thing about Collaroy is that the car is only a few metres from the waves so I could use the 3 fin set up for a while, then throw this thing in for a bit.

I'm impressed, I wasn’t expecting much difference compared to previous single fin attempts bit I’m reasonably sure this ones better and in the most unexpected area, the cutbacks.

Off the point the wave starts as a very slow and fullish right so the paddle into the wave was better, but that’s to be expected with a single fin. Staying on for the really fat deep-water section and maintaining speed was fractionally better but there again, that’s to be expected.

On the inside near the shore dump it walls up and closes out in front for you and you need to get as close as possible before stamping down with your back foot and nailing the hardest cutback possible in order to get value out of the last section of left with a good wall.

With the 3 fins in I reckon I was only able to ride the last bit of a left after the cutback only once in three attempts. The other two times I’d simply fall over the back of the wave because I either over rotated or the board just stayed cranked over too far.

With this fin in I was able to nail that cutback every time, I stopped counting after the first five. It seemed to keep the board flatter after the turn.

I wish I could nose ride because it seemed to tolerate me being up there a bit better. For some reason it appears to keep the board lower in the wave so the rear is under the curl so there’s less chance of it breaking loose. I’m always finding that I’m too high in the wave with the 3 fins in.

If you ever see one in a bargain basement bin in a windsurfer shop, or hanging off an old windsurfer up at the tip, try to grab it and give it a go. I’m making sure I keep this one in my box for trix.

I’ll be interested to see how it goes on a good sized wave.

Will do mate, funny story,a lovely lady and her friend visit my shop often and one day I mentioned I was off to Bali the next day for business, she said her son was over there working.I asked what does he do? Oh he has a surf school,BINGO your Cheyne's mother and I mentioned I had one of his fins early 80's( which was stolen ) on her next visit she gave me the signed fin and on my second day in Bali I hooked up with the man himself.

As always obct, another entertaining read. yep when you posted that picture Nose Ride can to mind but sounds like you can also cut loose, lets make some cosmetic changes and patten it.

obct, would you be able one day to post some pictures of the set up at your favourite breaks,I do look at the cams down your way but it would be way better with pic's

I'm still really hopeful that I will be able to get up to woopi in november.

If it happens, it'll be a good opportunity to swap some fins with other people who really know what they're doing to get their opinion.

As far as pics go, one day when the bommy it too big for me, I'll try to get a pic from longreef headland.

It's a pity longy doesn't have a good camera on the bommy, this is the only one I know of and it only shows the shark tower which is about 300 or 400 metres south of the bommy.
