Hi,

I broke a fin on my board and have 2 smaller fins that came with the board so I am not sure what combination to set up with the fins that I now have.

I have 2 fins that are 120mm high and 2 fins that are 100mm high. When I snapped the left fin I moved the center over to the left position. So I am not sure whether to set it up as a quad, and should the smaller fins go in the inside or outside positions?

Or should I just wait and buy the replacement left fin to take it back to the original 3 fin setup.

Some context, I am still a noob in the white water so guess that I might not even notice a difference.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I think I am good for a paddle handle for now, maybe Simondo has a suggestion for my fin options.

I just noticed the fins are actually different so the center fin on one side probably not optimal. But last Sunday in the white water (yes I am still in surfing preschool) it was turning just fine.

OK I'll be serious for once, the smaller fins to the outside as a quad set up or buy a replacement center to take it back to standard if you wish.Remember its so much harder to turn a board in whitewash so dont be too hard on yourself,if you could up load a picture of the bottom of your board that would help us.Keep going and enjoy btw welcome to the garden

Thanks Mac

Here is the Pic with the 4 fins mounted

Funny thing was that it WAS easy to turn with just 2 fins in the white.

And thanks for the welcome, I am enjoying playing in the garden.

The best fin setup for that board is M7s in the front and M3s in the rear - will give the maximum speed, drive, hold, stability, turnability and fun.

I run the M5 to front M3 at rear, or as thruster M5 in the centre.

singlefin is correct - smaller fins closest to the tail.

I have a 7'3" 7S in quad and love it... stick with it - that board will do you until you are really getting into some good green walls and starting some turns/moves...

No rule says that the smaller fins need to be at the back on a quad.

It's just what is most accepted. Some people also believe you can only use what is packaged as a quad set by a fin company.

On the Godfather of the modern quads website he talks about bigger back fins. http://www.mckeesurf.com/brucemckee/multisystem.htm

Smaller back fins make a board more pivotal, bigger back more directional. If you are in the wash still, you might be better off with the big fins in the back, just as you have them. I think I will try your set up in the next couple of surfs.

The general rule with fins, there are no rules........

I run 4 x M3 all side fins in my shortboard quad. It's also a bit more drivey than using 2 x center fins in the rear positions.

The advantage is that it feels more balanced than using bigger fronts with smaller sides. Feels more like a thruster but with the instant speed feeling and hold in the face of a quad.

This thread makes me want to get my quad out again.

Thanks all. Had Ben at Coolum Surf School instructing. Gave me some vital tips about securing the back foot for a stable popup made a big difference. Top teacher and perfect beginner conditions at 6am at Coolum. Graduated from Surfing Preschool to Surfing Grade 1.

Good work CMC.

Billboard, yes M7 M3 Front Rear is a fairly accepted arrangement. M7 M5 is really just too much fin for most people. M5 M3 is good for some people.

Like CMC said, I'm kind of keen to try big ones in the back now. I think I know what to expect. But it would be worth trying... At least take a key out, and try at least 1 wave like that... If you can conclude in your mind after 1 or 2 waves, swap them back...
