Do you get enough fitness from your surfing

i ask this question because i'm interested in what you guys do about fitness.
i have started a fitness program because i'm so unfit and need to get fit for indo.
and with that i have to continue this when i get home.
Please tell us what other activities you do outside family work sex and drinking.
if you don't,tell us why.. maybe its health/injuries or no motivation or perhaps you get enough out of your surfing.

cheers

I used to ride a 666 a lot when I lived in Sydney to get out on the water - these days they gather dust as I can almost always find a wave to ride if there is some swell. I used to run as well - need to start that up again!! I do some mountain biking and again that needs to be increased. I usually swim at the Pool once a week to get out of the office. But it would be fair to say that I am presently the least fit that I have ever been. Just writing that means I now have motivation for getting back to peak condition!! I guess I have just got a bit lazy in recent times - ne real excuse except for laziness.

Ok - just read this - ahhhh - time for some changes - clearly there is room. Having said all that though I can still surf 6 hrs a day (not all in row) when its good no worries I am also extemely p*ss fit these days

Only on a Sunday arvo after slamming a few bears makes the ride even more fun, however I did ride it last Saturday to a local football game and became ball boy,the bastards kept kicking goals a mile past the posts.

Weiry i'm the same. I managed to drop a bit of weight and picked up the fitness over summer by swimming three times a week, bike riding three or four times a week. When the surf picked up in winter, i stopped swimming and started surfing instead and have put nearly 4 to 5 kilos back on.

A few weeks ago went back to the pool but it was closed for work That gave me a another month off, before getting serous about weight loss again.

The other point is i found that 4 kilos has slowed me down my surfing s-it loads Especially on take offf.

G'day Weiry - I recently did a bit of extra work in the 10wks leading into my first snowboarding trip... especially the legs (did extra cycling - picking routes with long hills).

Despite this, after three days I was completely buggered - and only managed a 1/2 day on the fourth. Bounced back for the last two days.

Pre-training and cross-training will improve your overall fitness - but it is just not the same...

FYI - for anyone who has not tried it, snowboarding delivers the same stoke as surfing - but can hurt more when you fall - especially if the snow has become compacted - it can feel like concrete! In the week we were there we lost count of the amount of broken arms, shoulders and even a pelvis we saw

Happy to say that I proved my 14yo son wrong - and managed to 'carve' a run top to bottom without stacking (NB: Green run only - Pretty Valley for those who have visited Perisher)

No I don't get enough fitness from surfing only - for me it's mainly because, at the most, I get one surf in a week, more likely once every 2-3 weeks.

Last 3-4 months I have been doing a series of the "fit to surf" exercises on the coastal watch site. Noticed my endurance and paddle strength increase quite a bit. My back and paddle strength is my "weakest link".

So mainly just fit ball, some yoga stuff for my back, push ups and sit ups every second or third night after work.

Oh and the 'roids work too.....

Ive put 10kg on since giving up work. You must get some degree of exercise just in your general day while working.

I dont really like exercise, so try and avoid it, swimming laps and road running, id put in my top 5 of boring things to do. Surfing is good for your surfing fitness but does not much for your cardio

How long would you have free to exercise each day Weiry?

As you left it so late, I'm guessing you're cardio is a bit down and you need to build up arm strength?

Ideas, do you have a exercise bike or such, punching bag?, skipping rope

I Used to do something like the below to get fit...

To get you cardio up and burn off some weight quickly maybe do some interval training on the bike, basically go flat out, rest, flat out, rest, etc over and over. You can also do it on treadmills etc but I hate running so bike on the rollers it is, you can do it in 15-20 minutes too. Just google it and you'll get a programme. Swimming and running is good but doesn't lift your heart rate enough or often enough, getting your heart rate up will burn fat and also increase your cardio.

Next thing, those pissy excuse for guns hanging from your shoulders, you need to be able to paddle hard for short periods, a punching bag is good for this, same thing as the bike,

Punch flat out for 30 second rest for 30, flat out for a minute, rest for 1, flat out for 1.30, rest for 1.30, go as high as you like but if you can get to 4 minutes your arms will be noodle like, then rst for 10 minutes and do it all again.. You can ride the bike in the break to keep your heart rate up.

The whole thing should take half hour ish and you worked your arms legs and increased your cardio and burnt some fat... You should probably warm up on the bike for 5 minutes before starting 2or even do some skipping.

Also throw in some dips, good for your lats and push ups and your about done. You can do these in the break between punching if you a fit bugger or pain merchant..

Maybe some skipping and the occasional swim 2, also light weights with high reps are also good for building up your strength without adding muscle bulk.

A good one swimming is swim 50 metres get out run around the pool dive in, swim under water for as far you can than swim the rest of lap and run a lap again and repeat..

Running stairs or Sandhills are good too.

And I'd guess you should stretch as well, there's a website called surf fit that has good stretches.

And put down the cake

Hey Weiry
I definetly dont get enough fitness from surfing and I reckon unless your surfin every day not many blokes would there is a lot of sitting around waiting for waves out there to. In saying that I have just got back from a 666 at Gmount this morn 1 foot waves for 2 hours and am absolutely rooted. I find it very hard to exercise for the sake of getting fit, my heart rate is at its highest as i round the corner and see Maccas at Sth Tweed on the way home
Cheers Boof
PS I am 45 now bit like Mac aching and sore most days from one thing or another I have 3 operations to have Left knee reco, left shoulder arthroscope, and an ear exostosis to get drilled out these things stop me doing any high impact exercise at all. Just for the record unlike Mac I get plenty of lovin

I recall reading a story in late 80's about former Ironman Guy Leach getting crook often as he was superfit and it affected his immune system. So I thought fark it I just won't train period and I haven't been crook since.

I'm with Boofy exercise for the sake of exercise bores me sh..tless . Swimming laps would be IMHO the best exercise as a prep for surfing but never could hack endless boring laps . Try to hit the gym nightly but sometimes , or quite frequently ,the beer fridge beside the gym set leads me astray .

In summer I started taking out the surf rescue boards and paddling them for an hour every couple of days and I found that greatly increased my paddling power and endurance . And was more fun then just swimming for the sake of swimming .But sadly as the winter has moved in I have got slacker and slacker . and like you blokes when I increase exercise the old injuries flare up so its 2 steps forward 1 backwards .

Have been told I am crazy going out in the ocean on my own not in peak physical fitness but have been doing it for a while now and am still here to talk about it . Besides if I didn't surf I would be even less fit

In-door rock climbing, works for me

Its a very good x-trainer for surfing, it gives balance and upper body strength.

Its like surfing as in you get to a point where you dont think you are getting any better but then bang you are getting up harder climbs than you could imagine.
Its a massive workout and so much better than a gym imo, some of the French chicks that climb are awesome climbers and not bad to look at either
