This was my dream car for the formative surf years.

With a 253 up the front.

my brother had one with the 4.2L six, reliable and would go anywhere except past a petrol station.... and the worst piece of ** to drive !

I had one a with a 253 init and it was on Gas. I'll see if I can dig out a pic. The thing as unstoppable

This was my second surf car. Well, not this one, but it was identical. The mighty HK Kingswood. I wish I had kept it. The 186 was awesome as was the three on the tree without synchro in first - a two speed for all intents and purposes. It made cruising effortless. The ground clearance meant it was surprisingly good down a lot of tracks and the leaf springs had a pleasant floaty ride.

I tend to forget about the lack of a heater, the lack of a temperature gauge that caused me to cook a motor, the romance of the front bench was not met with corresponding comfort, and drum brakes all round certainly didn't help when the master cylinder failed and I ran up the back of a one year old Statesman on the freeway. I also wish I had snapped that photo of my future wife (at 20) leaning into the boot on a gravel road. She knew she was hot and suggested the pic; I was just impatient to get to the surf and grumpily told her to hurry up and get in the car.

I wont post the brown Ford Escort I had with a vinyl roof. A man with any dignity would never have owned it.

they did the job . but yeah plenty of things weren't good too.

autos were the go.

accidently put mine in reverse one day- doh.

was still able to drive it to the garage and cost about a $180 to fix. cheap as chips even then.

just imagine if you did that to a car today

Your wagon would have been nice. Surfed for 27 years with a licence and still haven't ever owned a wagon or van. Somethings wrong there. Next one.

Most of my station wagons were Ford's, Holden's were always more expensive for a car in the same condition & Ford's had a bit more room for the foam matress.

I miss the old 3 on the tree gear shift Drip, they were a cool set up I reckon

Liked those bikes with boards on so much I almost hesitate to post pic of my old scooter with longboard on bike wheel trailer.....but it did the trick for a while so I will. Dog sitting in helmet box was always a favoured option

Speaking of classic cars, the builder of the bat mobile and the Munster car, In addition to one of the surf buggies I posted, and many many others, George Barris has just died, I think he was 86
