Just because it's big, why must it be heavy

Your issue is early wave entry and to me, that means you need volume not weight, so every square inch of volume you have should be dedicated to floating you, not the board itself.

I recently borrowed a very heavily glassed board for a test, it was the Issac Fields model from Bennett's, it was so hard to pick up waves, I was reduced to catching whitewater and trying to ride out into the clean water, it was hopeless.

As I was getting out of the water to grab old faithful and go back in for a real surf, a buddy of mine was going in and he said something that will stick with me for a long time. He said he borrowed the same board and he also thought it was useless and he reckons that the reason it's called an Isaac Fields model is because he's the only one who can ride it.

That's when I realized that board weight may be a good thing for someone like Isaac who would be lucky to be 11 stone ring'n wet, but for a big bloke, it's just another burden to overcome.

I had a 12' Mickey Munoz a couple of years a go..great board wish I never sold it It was great for big paddle outs and caught waves with ease..I was looking at an 11' footer last year for the slow fat waves here, it didn't transpire but I do still think about getting a custom done...not as wide as those Munoz ones though!

Hi Spazz , we have a couple of guys over here with 12ft heavy glass jobs , both are getting pretty old I havn't riden them but have been offered suppose I should have , they are bloody heavey they carry them on there shoulders they say the drive is incredable .One was made by Steve Johnson (jinx)here in Gizzy . the other by Del surfboard in New Plymonth the owner of the jinx board has been riding a surf tech the same as mine latley don't know why if that tells you any thing

Yes, as someone mentioned they are hard to carry because they're 24.25 wide (well the 10.6 is. The bigger ones may be wider) plus the rails are vey thick. That means a bloke of my size, 6", needs to carry it wax in not wax out so I can get a good grip in the low rails.

At your height I think you could carry it normally.

My mate has a 12 foot Robert August log it is heavily glassed, he is away at the moment but when he gets back I will find out what the glass job is dims etc and get a coupla pics, we have taken it to the pass a few times, it was great you can paddle into anything its great for long drawn out turns, ripple riding etc, I am 95 kgs 6,1 he is prob 60 kgs wringin wet 5,8

That 11 looks unreal Spazz. I'm not surfing at the moment due to back surgery but should be back into the water in the next few months. I've sold all my boards except my 10 footer but have been thinking about going even longer once I get back into it.
You would be getting your fair share out the Pass with boards that big.

Yeah no worries. I've ridden a few 11 footers but nothing like that. Is that 11 around 24 1/2 wide ? I don't know if you have seen Sprout but there's some good footage of Skip Frye riding some big boards on it. Boards like that are so good for small long points and river mouths.

Looks great Big Spazz. Keep the pics coming. The board looks interesting . I spoke to a shaper the other day about big boards like that and he told me he could do a 16 footer if I wanted. I think 11 would be nice. You are going to be king of the Pass. [}:)]
