Im off to NZ and staying in MT Maunganui

Does anybody have any idea what the waves are like for SUP surfing ?

Is it a crashing beach break that needs a lot of duck diving ( Never a good thing for SUP ) or is it a break I can paddle around the sets and just go into the lineup to catch waves.

Do they have a break mostly dedicated to SUP surfing ?

Water Temp ? Cold Like Cape Town or Average Like Adelaide or warm like Bali ?

Any info about the Town in general and its suitability to sup surfing would be appreciated

sup friendly warmish water springy in the summer steamer in winter mainly beach breaks but very nice can have flat spells as in lee of east cape but nice place sometimes called a poor mans Noosa

easy place to sup but no real point breaks as such, we often don't get it over headhigh so you should be OK paddling out.
The main beach, right under near the mount gets pretty crowded and as the beach is soooooo dam long there are many many many other options to choose from, Try the banks either side of Omanu Surf club on a high tide or further down at Papamoa, soooo many options just find the bank you like on that tide. Little bit of sup foiling going on here too!!.

I'm moving there in a fortnight. One of the attractions being more surfing opportunities (SUP and prone). The beach profile is low-angle rather than steep so not what you'd call slamming beach break ankle breaking close out territory. Good for SUPing and plenty of opportunities for heading north to Coromandel for more juice.

I'd say from my non-local but upper north island east coast experience that a 10' + board will get the most use.

The water temp / climate is T-shirt and boardies at the moment. It'll be 3-4 ( or even 4-5) steamer material come winter!

Just spent the weekend there, main beach is usually packed and hard to find parking, rest of the coast beach still has good waves and plenty of space for SUP. Had some fun on a 8 foot starboard hypernut over the weekend. Definitely contemplating moving there.
