Had to jump on the mal this morning, getting a ding repaired on the SUP...have to be honest and say I just didnt enjoy it as much.

Found myself missing the view from the SUP when spotting the waves, being able to move between peaks easily as well as the view when paddling and taking off.

Not anti any type of board but def. enjoying the SUP more than anything at the moment.

Funny Froggy but i am feeling opposite of late.
After surfing loads this year on couple of different volume short boards prone i struggle to see myself going out on sup in a hurry.
I am all for any board if ur having fun.
Here is my list of advantages/dis:

Shortboard pros
- you can sit deeper knowing you can duck dive, helps with our waves where they break all over the shot.
- so much easier to lug around in car to beach etc.
- so much easier to turn around in water with a board 20-22" wide instead of 28-30
- the feel when in the right spot doing the right thing is amazing.
- closeouts im not scared of tucking in for a cover up as smaller boards can normally take it

shortboard cons
- gotta be in right spot
- slower on wave
- slower to paddle around to get to different peaks

SUP pros:
- get onto waves early
- fast
- catch more waves
- can get onto a wave on shoulders or not such good sections and make it with brute strenght and paddle technique
- can paddle out to outer reefs and get sik waves

SUP cons:
- near all surfers hate you because ther are a lot of SUP piggies out there that have not much water time but because of the above pros can get onto waves easy and lots of them. generally you get tainted with the same brush.
- cant duck dive
- to ride a board that really surfs you cant really stand up for long on them so you lose the advantage of being high to see sets/peaks etc.
- they are precious, slam them into rocks or a sand bar as you do when surfing and the size and weight behind them usually damages them
- they are massive to lug around. brings me back to windsurfing days.

each to ur own, enjoy the water. have respect for others.

I am with you. If my neck was not farked from rugby I would still be using a shortboard on the good days. Nothing beats a late drop and being able to stick the board in the barrel. I miss that, barrels are rare and short on a sup

same if my back wasn't screwed ,
all my mates i grew up with as groms ,they still give a hard time ,,,for switching
but look at the wave count ...now I'm riding smaller boards now its not so bad,i can throw it around now .
i wish they'd stop asking me when the sets are coming ......i have to lie most of the time

Had a crackin' little sesh this morning on my Creek, with C Drives fitted.
Cranked it like a big fat shorty. Easier when you're a big fat tally.
Not lying down again any time soon, but each to their own.

All pretty valid points guys, I surfed the scabs stretch this morning Ro, would have been bloody tough on the SUP but given the chance I would have given it a go

Would love a high volume good quad shorty for Scabs on days like today - fast sucky take offs, short rides and as you say peaks popping up all over the place would have been good to turn and burn.

I'll never go back. I catch more waves now, go out far more often, and have much more fun on the waves.

I'll give you my paddle when you pry it from my cold, dead, wet hands.

I will go back to prone surfing as soon as:
- I get back my hips of 20 years ago
- I can have less than 5 people out on a peak when waves are good

And even then, I don't know if I would if I could. I am so enjoying the view standing up, ogling waves is SUP dirty secret :-)

I have had back issues for the last decade and noticed my back is that much better if I SUP a couple of times a week. Prone is still a bit of fun but have to stretch like hell to stop the hips and back from giving me grief afterwards.

Mixing it up a fair bit lately after nearly 3 years of mostly SUP, missed being able to duck dive!

I agree totally about the improvement in spinal health that paddling a SUP gives. Reckon it has improved my short board surfing too.

Like the change I made to sup and don't know how long I can do this sport. I would like to try wind surfing as my other sup board have Mastfoot insert for windsurfing option.

bodyboard:
pros:
can take off super late and don't have the same fear when taking off when super late and deep...it's nearly impossible to **** up a late drop/vertical take off unless it's a top to bottom drop.
Can pull into a close out or super deep wave, ride over the shockwave and keep on riding until you get flipped and don't have to worry about landing feet first, or worry about a board hitting you in the head, or get as pumped because the main energy first is above your head.
-can do air moves off the lip without having to worry about busting your ankles forever. Also...the feeling of flying upside down with total control or doing an air reverse off a close out section.....ahh
-can turn round faster than a shortboard for a later takeoff in crowded waves
-lots of barrels. If you have a session where you don't make a barrel there is something seriously wrong with the surf or with you.
you take off under the lip instead of going out around and back in on a shortboard
cons:
they are slower than a surfboard and you cannot pump and make your own speed on the so they require a sucky wave or double up wedge wave and these waves are rare.
Also if your surfing a tube that is semi fat and needing some speed you are usually stuck...shortboard can weave in he barrel.

So the sloppy surf sessions are lame with no power. Getting a good session on them is rare.

Winter high tides in the morn are a bitch if your on a shorty, even with a chunk of swell it can be frustrating and leave you wanting more foam,

I love em all. Short board, mini mal, SUP & now foil.
But at my age of 58 years, weight around 80 kgs & week paddle power my short boards are all around 38 to 44 litres. 6ft to 6ft 6" long.
They all have their differences in feel. The SUP for early take offs, long rides & ease of paddling. The mini mal for that gliding speed & carving. The short boards for that skateboard feel especially going back from a SUP. Love the feel of my Sunova single fin for its speed & carves. I'm not much into shredding because I can't do it. Lol! But remember when I was young trying to that elusive 360 & tubing the shore breaks on my late 70s single fin Carrabine board. And now the foil board for its whisper quietness with turbo speed & air float.
Jack of all trades master of none. Lol.

What else is good about the foil? They seem like the thrill of riding them cannot be explained?

Hi All, started supping this last summer. After short boarding since I was a grom on a Colonel Sanders foamie was finding it tough after a few years away from it. At 53, struggling with injuries, fitness and crowds I was surfing less and less, so I bought SUP to have paddle on the river and catch a few small waves.

Well that was fun and all but I found it really hard to surf a 10 and a half foot board. Digging back into the piggy bank I bought a used 8'4 Deep JC of the buy and sell here.

First time out on a local river bar, paddled late and steep into a shoulder high set. Somehow survived the drop, planted my back foot on top of the inside front fin and pushed......It was like stepping on the accelerator. Two big fast carves across the face then ran out in front of the closeout. Zoomed around the broken section then bottom turned back up onto the clean face and pulled off a big floater of the next closeout.

Landed on my feet.......i'm still grinning. Hadn't surfed like that in a long time. I surf now 5 or 6 times a week I'm fitter than I've been in 20 years and some of those old injuries don't seem to bother me that much now.......

I started SUPing 5 years ago for the same reasons, I still have my short board and longboards but they are just gathering dust now, I won't part with them as they gave me so much and enjoyment over the last 30 + years. I remember Luke and the boys at Ocean Addicts warning me after purchasing my first SUP a 9"6 Manawa "you'll never go back" I just laughed and thought SUPing will only be for flat water and small waves. I was wrong they were right... Now I own four SUPs, from 8"3 to 10"6 for all wave types. I will never go back stay stoked.
