Opinions, theorising etc etc etc

You cannot surf these boards like a shortboard period !!
The paddle is there as a
Prop essentially and aids you to stand on the edge of the rail and lean almost level to the wave face on a bottom turn and also assists you to turn the board sharply on a re entry
It may seem pointless to sum however I'd love to see some of the knockers try shortboard stand ups
Perhaps it is envy that drives the negative spin in some ??

Oh also don't forget

IT IS SURFING .... Not supping

Just anotber form

I liked watching it and could appreciate the skill and power some showed using the paddle to Good effect, the stuff I don't like is when they catch the wave and basically put the paddle away now that's silly. Should not compare it too prone surfing anyway completely different and a different skill set I reckon, just as long boarding is to short.

Funny. I like when they dont start swapping sides because of some dumb arse comp rule says you gotta

To me its all about leverage but that in its self leads to bad habits after a while

epic..beautiful conditions and awesome footage. I think in these conditions watching people kill it on a SUP is better than watching people prone surf.

It is just an opinion...

These guys sink if they stop paddling..and have to sit down and wait. It becomes short board surfing with a paddle.

I think that really good surfers persevere on a sup until they get frustrated at not being able to go REALLY vertical etc, then their boards get too small, then their muscles get sore, then supping not as enjoyable THEN back on a shortboard.

I'm a level below them so don't get frustrated on a sup

you have got it spot on.

although I think any half decent surfer this happens too.

getting up there isn't the problem. they are just too big to fit in getting back down vertical ish and don't have that fast snap speed.

so the second half becomes this soft float make it back down move

with jc at sunset he had the size of wave to fit it in. great surfing by him

dogman has the power but he uses a hack to get the most out of it which changes the angle getting back down

I know he dabbles but put a paddle in his hand and the debate is finished.

They got to stop chasing the 4 to the beach and as Derek Hynd says "embrace the jazz".

The worst thing is being stuck in the middle.

Your right it's all about leverage, using the paddle to crank powerful turns on a big board. Looks great when done right like James was doing, like dogman and Muir, blame chambers and a host of others. The paddle is their to leverage off, not just to get you into the wave.

I must say I really enjoyed the recorded "live" videos. These waves seem so tricky and technical, just managing them looks like a huge challenge.

Personally, I love seeing riders capitalizing on the SUP differences: volume and the speed it provides, and the paddle leverage in turns (whether you switch hands or not), trying to master trajectories different from modern shortboarding.

It's a prototype 8'5, you might even see some of the new 2017 JP range resemble it
