Turning 54 this year and been busy learning to foil.
Had a recent trip to Hawaii and as always get humble.... As the mrs says don't grumble.
Probably should get hold of some old boards. Road an ol PSH 9'0 diamond tail out in some solid east side juice.
So looking back, hope to keep the ride alive.

Turning 60 this year... What I found out is I get muscle strains more easily. Before, it was mainly if I didn't warm up properly before a session, now it happens when my muscles get tired towards the end of the session and I force things (hard strokes to get a wave, recovery to avoid a fall). And it takes more time to heal, I must now keep out the water a full 2 weeks if it happens. It also happen easily if I didn't SUP for some days.

So what i do now is avoid brute-force things, get out before being exhausted, and try to have some land exercises on the paddling & balance muscles (I am building a simple paddling simulator that seems to help).

On the plus side, only one year left before retirement!

No, no, no.
It's "you're only as old as the woman you feel"

Already 54 and like most of my mates want to keep being active for a very long time.
Already replies with 67 and turning 60. Wow colas one year to retirement, that has to increase your sup time
Here in New Zealand it's currently 65 with some politicians wanting to increase the age
I still want to sup, surf, windsurf, sail, mountain bike while still working and having a balanced family life as eventually kids will leave home and have their own lives.
It's been a couple of years since I forward looped windsurfing and I'm not chasing large surf and I'm no longer really fit and collected some injuries along the way and it definitely takes longer to heal.
We have joined a gym and back into working out to tone up and make the most of everyday.
Had a good sup surf today and swell looking good for tomorrow

No special plan, but most French big companies (and in my case a French branch of an US one) want to get rid of older employees, so you can enter various company-specific pre-retirement plans up to 5 years before the official retirement age, 62. I got a plan where I could work half-time 2 years (mornings off!) then not at all 2 years (so I would not work but not officially retired from 60 to 62), and my wife got a similar one. The company can then get you out of the official employees records as soon as you enter the plan and out of the wages budget line, as you become a one-shot expense and not a permanent one. So basically, it is cheaper and more convenient for them than firing old people, and it allows to present it as job cuts for the greedy shareholders. And the employees become grateful towards the Company for this graceful retirement rather than getting disgruntled being fired, so they are more productive, notably to train replacements. A win/win situation.

That's looking pretty solid. Good effort, Interesting to read about people's experiences of aging. My inital post was more nostalgic than concerns about anything specific. Sorry bout my spelling, never been a strong point.

I totally understand how fortunate I have been, to enjoy my surf bum life and I am super grateful to have made it this far.
If I die or get injured tomorrow.... I have Zero regrets

good thing cuz I broke a rib in some OH waves last week
looks like I'll be paddling and riding my bike more for a while

While I respect my increasing fragility, I still push myself out of my comfort zone all the time.
Solo surf trips to Portugal and Thailand in the past year,
plus always seeking out lessor known points where I can enjoy OH swells by myself.

I just filled my aging van with sups and drove 1,600 miles with weak brakes, no airbag, doubtful seatbelt... plus the van was running like crap.
Drove defensively and made it safely to Florida
Traded the old van for new.... then moved the SUP racks to my sweet, newish CreekVan.

I turned 70 sleeping in my old CreekVan, on the side of the highway during a surf trip.

NEVER GIVE IN.... keep chasing it and pushing yourself.
If you slow down.... you will rust in place.

You may not have a choice but to retire young . Can be hard to find work after 55 for some . I seem to get a redundancy at least every 5 years . But I reckon after my next one it will be tough to find a similar gig.
On a positive note I was off work for 11 months mid 2017. Best 10
months of my life I reckon. Spent a lot of time on the ocean and doing real jobs rather than an a corporate bs job. The corporate bs .....well as I get older I become less tolerant of the crap . I just do it for the money now

You're a legend Rick, awesome outlook on life., I broke a rib in similar conditions last year and had a 14 hour flight the next day - not fun! Although worse than that was not being able to surf for a few months!

Well full respect doing things at that level.
I am 73 and a bit, started kite foiling at 70 and now wind winging and other related foiling.
I love the learning process and the progression hopefully it puts off deterioration.
While I am no where near your adventurous level I can relate.
How lucky are we at our age.

Paddled on the sunshine coast a Xmas with some over 70s blokes and they were ripping it and laughing their heads off. I hope I'm up for that too.

The trick is to not to wear yourself out - that is your shoulders, knees, ankles etc. etc. all wear out but you need to be aware that it will happen and to slow the process as much as you can while still having fun so warm up, stretch, do your own body weight bearing exercises etc :-)

I run my own business, so now at 57 I am wondering when the right time will be to "pull the pin"... I hope to slide into retirement; surf more and more, work less and less, but keep the family/35 employees/customers happy... When I am up in the mountains or out on a board I want to retire. When I am engaged in the business I am happy to keep working. But then you hear of people karking it at age 60 and that makes me want to retire sooner.

And then there are the challenges that life throws up that makes you reevaluate your priorities. I almost karked it 10 years ago, Hilly was assaulted by a dolphin, and Seajuice had his foot bitten by a shark!
