Although I don't necessarily agree in principal, I do concede there is method in the madness of SurfershaneA's suggesting repairing or compensation from retailer.
I'll just give you a quick story (It's a bit quiet at work) My wife's Aunty recently had a bingle in her car (single car accident her fault) her husband took the vehicle to the car sales from where they had purchased New, the manager took one look and said whip it around to the workshop we can't have Beryl driving that around it's bad for business. Car yard repaired for free $700 damage. Their rational thinking was Lionel and Beryl buy cars, we want their business. So I guess likewise with a board would you want return customers or boards with obvious home repairs advertising the boards weakness.

Of course I could be way off course here but good story eh

Over time I have worked for many car dealers and some do do this. Mainly bigger dealers but its not unheard of.

I cant see where the original poster has even mentioned the brand or type of board, bagged the brand or the dealer...He has supplied a photo that does NOT emphasis the brand, however it s obvious what it is...

He simply states...

"Fairly light shin impact (did not hurt or mark me) has caused this dent and split to board in first hour of use. I cant believe they are supposed to be that fragile as surely not fit for use in waves?"

He has a point and maybe by the direction of the crack compared to the indent, he may well have grounds to believe that is not fit for purpose. Maybe it is just an unfortunate event, maybe it is a manufacture fault. Don't you buy a 4x4 because it has the ability to handle the terrain it is deigned to operate in...

Personally I would love a full carbon board, but I think will just stick with the basic constructions..

Full carbon boards can be extremely tough, depending on the construction (with PVC sandwich on deck, kevlar rails,...) but it wont be 4 kg boards.
However, even if not a lot lighter than a glass board, carbon may be worth it for its responsiveness, depending of your toy budget...

You are correct, but a lot of the manufactures are shedding kilos at the expense of durability. Personally, I like durability in my gear.

Exactly.

People use the net to get information and share experiences. Just because you can recognise the brand does not mean the poster meant to be malicious.

Unfortunately, the attitudes of some seem to be a reflection of the rotten customer service you can suffer over here. Thankfully, the physical surf shops I deal with seem to be the exception. Most will bend over backwards to help!

Board builder get flamed if boards are heavy, and flamed by other people if they are fragile...
I do not remember who said "A compromise is good when everybody is unhappy" (Winston Churchill?)

Also, Board maker may balance things differently every year...

And some assh*les flame them in both cases :-)

yes , agree 100%.

Some of use are not too sure on what to do. I shinned a board I had and it cracked like an egg. I treated it as a user mistake not a warranty claim but if I need some advice i will post here and hopefully get some useful advice :-)

I am not going to respond to car crash or ripped t shirt analogies or otherwise justify my post but will say thanks to those who got my point and saw the question raised for what it was.

For others who use these and similar pages to gain advice and or insight I offer this update. The board has been vacuum tested over the cracks and is still airtight. This means that the (light to possibly moderate as i have mountain biking shins and just because it didnt hurt doesnt mean it wasnt a fair whack but certainly was sustained in normal if possibly unlucky novice surfer use) damage is to the outer coat only and superficial.

The local dealer has been superb and will take the board back to use as their demo for the season if I do not want to keep it. I understand that they do not even intend to approach the importers. Pretty sure I dont need to say how glad I am to have purchased from trusted locals over unknown discounters.

(Please ignore if you are a budding detective, general cynic, doubting thomas or wish to believe carbon is totally wonderful and or infallible).
