I always distance myself from traditional surfers when suping, if there are surfers on a good bank I'll sup a crap bank by myself instead of surfing with them I het way more enjoyment that way.
Today it was one foot on the sets and I was suping this tiny right bank getting long rides that would not be possible unless your riding a high volume board as I was 135 lts. The whole beach as far as you can see north and south was devoid of any other surfers just me.
This older bloke on a mini mal paddles out and sits right where I was enjoying myself heartley by myself as I like to do. The bank as far as I was concerncerned could not accommodate many people.
So when the dude cheerfully said "how you going" I gave him a bit of a serve, informing him of the kms of empty beach yet he needs to come sit right on top of me! It was a bit tense there for a bit, after catching a wave I felt it 2as a bit over the top and said to the guy I was sorry for the outburst, which he replied it's ok.
We did not say another word to each other until he went in maybe a hr later.
What do you reckon? Over the top aggro or the dude should have som3 consideration and go 50m away and surf by his self?

probably not but you're free to say what you like as long as your not physically hurting anyone.
It would be nice if people just shut up and show them how good they really are in the surf with a nice ego look and moves, you know, you have been doing this for so long and you do nothing else but surf in your veins.
I've been told few times to go away and ended up moving along and found some great spots. If you feel cranky maybe try something different like being

We have all been there, not instantly behaving like we would have wanted. It depends so much on the mood you are in - and I must say, things are so different when it is a young gal rather than an old bloke... You did the right thing anyways by apologizing.

Just for some perspective, it's 1 ft on the sets and you are yelling at the only other guy out in an otherwise empty line-up.

Over the top, for sure.

Yeah, a bit uncalled for. I'd be stoked to have any break even with just one surfer, let alone a friendly one. If any person on another board gives me cheer, it makes me do the same.

i like the old saying 'give and get respect', especially in the water for mixed water sports

One other dude that says hello is not bad, yeah you were a bit harsh.
The fun really begins in a similar situation and three longboard hipster dudes and dude-ett decide to just invade and takeover continually paddling to the inside like you were never there and don't even give you any acknowledgement as they paddle past . I think then you have the right to just drop and fade.
But you must smile politely.

I guess the other thing to keep in mind is that it's possible the other bloke either A) isn't very experienced in the water or B) may be coming back to it from time away/injury etc. and just wanted to be near someone else in the surf in the event something went wrong for him. If you're not confident in the surf (for whatever reason) it's not a bad idea to be around others - can't expect someone to save you if you get in strife, but psychologically for him it's possible that's why he came out to the same break. Like others have said, all of us overreact sometimes or just have a **** day mentally - I'm sure old mate wasn't too fazed by it. Don't beat yourself up

You were a bit rough there quikdraw, there might have been a number of legit reasons for him to paddle out right next to you such as not wanting to surf alone or maybe it was the bank on the beach.

The herd mentality is a funny thing though, so many times I have seen people flock to the spots where other people are surfing and be completely oblivious to good waves just because there's no one on them. A couple years back in indo my mate and I scored a firing beach break bank to ourselves day after day whilst just a k or so down the beach there would often be 30 guys out.

One little trick I like to play on people who paddle right out on your spot is I then paddle out of position and wait for them to follow, then paddle back to my spot and get it to myself again

Mate, one of my favourite moves, especially when it's a herd of groms that has descended upon you.
Put plenty of emphasis on craning your neck, looking for the sets, until you are well and truly noticed.
Drift out wide, catch a couple on the shoulder and draw them across, then paddle out deep and wayyyyy back around and start surfing on the opposite side. The others that didn't follow you first time inevitably go that way.
If that works, you've split the herd like a good kelpie, and you can keep surfing where you were to start with.

I have gotten so used to stink eye over the years (I like to think I'm immune to it nowadays), that when someone says "hello" out there, it's a pleasant surprise and I always reciprocate.
It mostly turns in to a fun sesh, and complimenting someone on surfing well on a good wave feels good, and when the compliment is returned it feels even better! It's called sharing the stoke.
It's taken me a long time to gain the trust of the local crew (most of them anyway), by showing them that I'm not a flash in the pan. I've stuck at it. Got my kids involved. Learned to know when I'm in the way of superior surfers, and try not to f up their waves.
If someone comes and sits on top of me, is rude to me, or I can tell they're grumpy, I'll either surf the skin off my board all around them, as though they don't exist, or move elsewhere. Depends on the day. I have said "Good morning" and "Howyagoin'?" a few times, and received no reply, so I answer for them. "MORNING" and "F'N AWESOME MATE".
Mostly I just take advantage of the best things about SUP. Being able to easily see the next break, and getting there with ease with my trusty paddle.
It's a big ocean.

i take the approach that we already have a poor rep (deserved or not) and prone surfers are just looking for another reason to hate on us.

so i try not to give anyone an excuse to tell their mates about how poorly the SUP dude in the lineup behaved. i'm always friendly in the lineup, i call others into good waves, i announce the sets the prone riders can't see coming and i will move to another bank if it gets busy.

I just had fun kitesurfing by myself and didn't have to tell anybody off haha, yeh it was over the top I guess I expect people to have the same consideration I have as I'll always surf the next bank along and it came out sideways on that morning. I didn't yell I just informed the bloke of the 3kms of beach that was empty but he had to come sit on top of me.

Take it as a compliment, the bloke probably saw you get a few nice runners and that's why he hit the same bank.

I reckon if you jump to conclusions and got carried away but pulled your head in and made amends what's the problem?

Ive done it before and had it happen to me before - no big deal.

I still surf all types of boards which I reckon gives good perspectives on different behaviour, I try and just make sure I'm not ruining anyone's session regardless of the piece I f foam I'm on - seems to work so far

In general if the crew is friendly I don't mind if they rock up, if they are not there is a list of tactics that can be deployed - aargh ha ha

Heres meprone surfing at solid nias, that swell was much heavier then the photo looks. Prior to the earthquake/tsunami. I grew up prone surfing, boogering slabs that surfers don't touch, sailing boats.i now kitesurf and sup only , for reasons I won't go into here I cannot prone surf anymore, but without being self indulgent I've spent more time in the water then most. I know the intricacies in how we differ, thats why i always try my hardest tofind my own bank. Got any pics of yourself surfing?
Anyway I know what happened and as southwestern above states I've opened myself up to criticism just by posting this as people typing on the internet start to virtue signal about how angelic they would handle a certain situation or how it's one foot your a kook blah blah just the usual internet fluff.
There has been some good levelheaded replies by people with experience here generally saying we all have bad days it's all good, coz I don't react like that very often at all. You never know what someone else is going through in this world but we're quik to judge em usually.

It's not "a bit like " that's exactly what happened. As I stated above on a high volume board the 1ft wave had long rides that totally impossible for someone even on a minimal. Any I'm just about done with this as people have time to turn over in there heads how they'd go about it, none of your opinions even matter anymore sorry to say it's water under the bridge.

When your opinion is as arrogant as to judge someone's life from reading a thread online with the use of a hashtag (hehe) I'd say take that **** back to the kiteboard forum, I doubt your as dashing in real life because you'd actually have to back it up with some substance bru, I surmise that's why you spend so much time on seabreez forums talking smack

I don't say anything against anyone. I just say hi, how you going etc.
Then keep surfing the way I want & share the waves. Keep the anger to myself if they get in my way & hope they start to see their own stupidity.
I also try & get a spot away from most proners especially when I'm on a foil.
But have still had run ins with them by accident & copped a serving from them. So I apologised & move further out of their way.
One time I copped a serve from a proner who was away from the usual pack of proners. He shook his head in discontentment when I arrived near him. I knew he was aiming his disapproval at me which annoyed me so I said, "What's your problem?" He said, "Well it looks like I haven't got a chance getting any waves with you on a SUP!"
I assured him I wasn't there to get in his way & I don't get in anybodies way when they're on a short board. Told him to surf as he wants to.
He then recognised me from a previous surf session & apologised due to me not being a wave scab.
So I say dont tell someone off who paddles over or near to you.
But I can understand someone been told if they inconvenience others by dropping in or scabbing every wave like chips to seagulls.
Other things that annoy me are SUPers who can't make the extra effort to paddle around a break zone & instead paddle directly towards you in your path expecting you to be able dodge them!
Of late I have had some on surf skis in my way as well. They just look at you like cows in a paddock when you're bearing down on them as you take that late drop on an overhead wave. Which most times I would have to bail out & waist another wave to avoid a serious accident especially on a foil that can make two skis out of one
So many waves are unnecessarily waisted because of this. And they just don't get it!
When I paddle out I always take a wide berth around anyones intended line of ride. So easy to do on a SUP.
And oh quickdrawMgraw, totally understand how you feel. You just spoke your mind.
It's like when I go to a public toilet with about 10 empty cubicles side by side when some dumb idiot decides to sh#t right next to me.
They just don't get it!
