I've already seen a couple of the new carbon models in the water... so I guess yes...

To me $2500 is the top of what the majority of us are willing to fork out. Also note Fanatic's prices have dropped for 2019.

Thats the problem with this Windsurfing pricing scheme (insane high prices, but offering rebates and sales so nearly nobody pays the full price). It can kill an industry...

Yeah ok, i'm with you on thinking there has to be a limit for this kind of stuff. As a person who owns a company myself i do understand how the prices can end up where they are and Starboard does do a good job on many levels. I am guessing that the whole model might be changing and with so many team riders they are now the main customer for them as maybe beside the top few riders most others might just be on a discount of retail deal in which Starboard international would be losing nothing and i would say the real losers would be shops and the importer.
I guess the other way is to make the boards cheaper and use cheaper constructions like some have done but super risky as i would rather keep a brand with better quality and work on other ways to get the pricing right.

I'm curious as to what people think is fair. For us we tend to always be looking at building things better and this comes at a price but i also see no point going to the extreme of having the best product money can make if no one will buy it. Right now it seems that even some of these brands know they are charging to much and are now pushing the cheaper models as a better option as they know they might have a better chance of selling those boards. I also find it hard as we build a board in a very similar way that really retails for over a $1000 less but i guess we also do not have the high over heads!!

Love to know what people think if they are happy to share whats to much?

When a top end Surfing shortboard is $1000, and most high end Mals are approx $1800, I find it hard to comprehend that a Surf SUP should be $3000 - 3500.

There are so many great brands that offer a high end construction for $1800 - $2200 (One Sup / Smik / Sunova / JL etc) that it makes me wonder why you'd spend more...

For basically the same money you can go a full custom board from Deep / One Sup / Surefire etc in case the stock models isn't quite right.

I see the manufacturer / importer / retailer model changing... loosing one of the links - like JL have done here in Oz, Sunova etc. Basically every other retail model has gone this way. Just look at your local Westfield SC.

Pretty sure starlite is ?1199 in the UK which is almost bearable, I think of the big players Fanatic have got the right idea this year! Single construction and price reduction. A lot of stuff out there is way over engineered IMO and the distribution model doesn't help here either.

I think the best idea is to boycott the board makers that have a yearly update of graphics, construction and everything for no reason bar duping people into believing the current model board will make their lives better for 3500 dollars.
If your product is good enough, you shouldn't need to change it every year.

My Starboards have held up better than my Sunova has and the MSRP is $200 less. The Sunova is (was) prettier, but both my starboards went 4+ years without a single repair. Couldn't rate the construction better. Don't know if the 'carbon' construction is worth the premium because I would never pay it, but their entry level boards have always impressed me. This year the pro is pretty significantly over hauled, so I can see reason to buy an 2019 model over an older one, but they didn't make a 120L Pro model, so they still won't be getting my money.

In the US, I think the Starlite historically runs $1400 and the Carbon $3000+ at retail prices USD. The Starlite retails at a slightly lower price than a lot of the competition here. My Carbon Hypernut which I bought at a year-end discount is by far the most well made and durable board that I have owned. In terms of the differences in the constructions, the carbons run about 1 kg lighter than what I have seen and my 2017 feels livelier in the waves than the Starlite's I have surfed but we would need to hear a ride report on the new Flax Balsa for an accurate comparison of 2019s. That said their retail price puts the Blue Carbon way above any other board in the market and makes the Starlite attractive.

It's quite funny timing with all this chat on starboard.. I went in to my local shop before to see if they had the new models as they've stocked starboard for years.
thwy reckoned they wouldn't be stocking them anymore due to 'political reasons'. I asked what happened and they said starboard had changed their payment terms, were being very demanding and also wouldn't or hadn't picked up credits for an amounting container of boards with warranty issues. This left all this cost with the shop to have to cover while starboard hadn't given them refunds.

as as a result they are now going to be stocking smik in a couple of months time and said the full carbon model would be $2300 against starboards new balsa $3500

As far as I can tell the new starboards are the best made so far and that is what starboard want us to think, but no one will pay the price unless they have more money then they know what to do with (and there are people around like that), but regarding the average sup rider then there is no question that the prices are way too high. The best thing to do is only buy other cheaper boards (local, discounted boards, demos, or secondhand etc.:-)

Easy decision for me...

2 x Deep Customs = 1 Starboard Carbon Balsa
or
2 x Onesup Customs = 1 Starboard Carbon Balsa
or
1 of either custom and a sick Sup trip to Bali

if you think their prices are too high, then don't buy them. that's called a free market. but calling for a 'boycott' is ridiculous. your decisions are yours alone.

I for one have been boycotting Ferrari's pricing model for years...

Maybe if they cut down on the amount of variations in their model range prices would come down a long way. We are spoiled for choices and sometimes that is more confusing than helpful . Spend the development money they have to make a board that works and leave it at that.

You buy what you can afford at the time, for some this kind of money ($3500) is just a drop in the ocean, but for most of us ( I think ) this is a ridiculous amount to pay for a sporting item that may or may not break/perform to your expectation. I agree with beached57 you can't just go boycott this and that, other than over pricing they haven't done anything wrong and actually as far as I can see they're doing as much as they can to reduce negative impact on the environment. I have owned customs, productions and mutations in the past, I own a very good second hand starby at present which I'd have to say has out performed and so far so good no repairs a year later. My customs were always being repaired, add it up people. Two years is what I was getting out of a board but I suspect this board may last at least 24 mths .
I have no affiliation or allegiance to any brand and never will

And a SUP is bigger, carbon, handle, 5 fin boxes and a deck pad, think it's on par.

That's my opinion

Why not boycott the cheap and nasty brands?

If you want a starboard, don't moan about the new price - wait, and buy one second hand. Or buy something else that suits your price point
