Seeing as there is a lot of vanguard style chat going on at the moment i though i would just post a few pics of a board i have just built for my self 7' x 26" 1/2 double 4oz top and bottom with uni carbon cap in my little funky resin pigment glass job. My normal every day board i ride at the moment is a 7'4 x 28 fish i way 72kg and 7'2 so its a bit of a step down but fingers crossed not to far.
Ride report to come when soon as we get some waves here in the uk.

I cant seam to add any more pictures but there are a load more on my face book page here www.facebook.com/CGCustomPaddleboards/photos/pcb.315469811960177/315469088626916/?type=1&theater

Hi jerone im based on the south coast near brighton so we dont get to many waves but plenty of down winding. I try and go down to devon and cornwall when ever i can.

Impressive building skills!
Is the kickpad huge or is it just an optical illusion?

cheers colas its big but not quite as big as it looks maybe about 1" 1/4 tall i like having something fairly large at the back so you can really jam your foot at the back when you need to and to stop sliding of the back when going backwards.

Well i wasn't expecting to get it wet today but before race training tonight i couldn't help but throw it in the lagoon to see how it floated with me on it and well it was toatly fine! it was actually very stable not far off my 7'4 x 28" fish, it does have less directional control while paddling but its still not bad. After training there was half a foot of much braking on the sand at low tide, it was defiantly not any sort of proper wave but i did get on a few and it felt promising so cant wait for a proper swell to come now!The proof that it floats me and i actually managed to stay dry even in the mushy waves.

Charlie,

That photo points to just why the board is stable underneath your feet despite the muck. If you have a look at the rear of the board it is obviously submerged and the centre of the board is quite level with the water line, so theoretically you shouldnt experience that much in the way of water slapping against the board. Nice lift at the front. These boards just keep impressing. I am guessing Charlie that at 7'0 and and just of 25 inches this board has to be pushing the 80L volume and under.

Mate well done!!

PS What thickness is it mate.

Yea I have been telling people the volume thing for years and it was the first thing I did when I gave up my sponsor ship and started to shape my own boards, it seams only just now people are starting to catch on the water on the deck acts like a hydraulic damper and slows everything down. Once I get some time on this I think going down to 24 won't be a problem. I forget the exact thickness but i think it most probably is between 3 1/2 and 3 3/4. I am building a huge cnc to cut my boards on so will be able to tell you more accurately thickness and volume when I cut one on there. Best regards charlie

Yea like you found it was way to much to go out and buy one straight off so have been building it my self its still super expensive but cheaper if you dont factor in your own time, it has all so been a massive challenge and a huge learning experience so pretty excited as its nearly finished after almost two years of research planing and building. My back ground is just building stuff since i was a toddler one of my first toys was a proper mini tool kit and have built every thing from motorbikes to houses i all so have a degree in sports technology.

That is insane Charlie props to you mate , such a big effort . Look forward to seeing what comes off that machine. Now you just need to build a 3D modeller for your fins

cheers yea im hoping to do myself a unlimited board which is why i built it so bi (20') 3d printing in materials that are suitable for fins is still really expensive i have a small mill i will convert to cnc after that should cut fins but at the moment its way easier to just buy something of the shelf thats pretty good already and doing the boards eats enuff of my time up as it is. the cnc is going to be fun there is a lot of other projects i have in mind to use it for one of which will hopefully be building a plane :)

Yea why not! We'll maybe a ultra light or a glider I think that way you can get away with less paper work. I used to fly gliders and plaines when I was 18 and it would be amazing toy to get down to the West Country in the uk for a surf. If I lived some were with warm consistent waves I would probably just be on the beach the hole time with a beer like you guys in auz

cheers it will be awesome but only when its working at the moment its still just a very expensive project but its getting there.

Im seriously starting to get impatient i have never wanted to surf a new board more and there is very little signs of any proper waves on the forecast for any were with in reach for as far as i can see. it would be a good time to go to the wave garden but the one planned for the ik is not yet built.

Brighton..probably the same crappy short period waves as we have in Holland.I,m really curious how the board works for you as the concept looks very atracting to me for the less perfect conditions.

as rob said thats insane.

the reason for building one is not these small boards its mainly for race boards and large stuff like that. Trying to shape 14' by eye and get it perfect and make small changes each time (my eyes are not great in the first place) is almost imposable. let alone 18' which i have tried and got it pretty good but not to a point were i was happy, it really frustrates me when something is even a little bit out so maybe it will help me relax a little with that to.

I will all all so use it for a number of other little things to hopefully earn a little money back from so it will be more than just for boards. Im hoping i can all so re visit my hollow boards again and use it to create very accurate moulds to do them from. Because i like to build all sorts of things its really just going to be like having a big toy to play with that will allow me to experiment so much more with all my designs. There are a number of different programs the machine will run on mach3 and i will probably use shape3d for boards

That looks amazing! i have done a lot of traveling az, nz usa peru france ect ect but doing a trip just for testing a board is out of my budget. It is 8 hours round trip to devon or cornwall when its working for proper waves, france is some times doable but it looks flat there at the moment too. There is a slim chance we may get a slightly bigger load micro wave tomorrow with 20knots of wind but at the same time it could be non existent. You guys don't know how good you get it if im lucky i will get a surf every other week or maybe once a week if we have a good spell in the winter but it its maybe once a month if that in the summer with the rest of the time it being down winders or kite or windsurfing.

i got out on the board finally for the first time today, the conditions were still not good 15-20 knots shifty wind surfing in a harbour/river mouth with a lot of water moving around and only very short 1-2foot waves. It was pushing the my limits for staying up right but then i wasn't really expecting it to be easy as it hard in that spot even on my 7'10. I had a couple of waves that gave me enuff to crank a few turns and the speed it came around and snaps was like no other sup i have paddled yet. Im not 100% convinced on the single concave yet and think i may experiment a bit with a bit more of my fish style bottom shape but outline and size seam great. hopefully looking like we may get some better waves in a week or two and i will try get some pictures then.
