looking at pads and colors from a bunch of manufacturers has me thinking that many are made in the same factory and have different bard names slapped on them.

Whoa, there is no way you are going to exploit the potential of this board with a tail pad so far forward, especially with a quad setup...

Don't know whether I have ever put my foot on a tail pad when surfing a wave.......call me old and fuddy duddy if you want.....trying to get tail pad into a realistic placement for my surfing style?

You should try, it will change your (surfing) life, and it is really not hard. I had also to force myself to do it.

A good way to progress is to set some goal before each session, e.g: switching paddle side on each stroke, staggered stance, rear foot on the pad, ...

F-One Sups... they don't sell deckpads as a spare part as far as I know... OAM best aftermarket IMO, If you can't be bothered cutting your own out of foam sheeting.

....super thick...

I depends on your taste. A lot of people (like me) prefer thin, firm pads for a more direct feel of the board (like the FCS 3mm dimple pad). Plus I find that thick and soft pads tend to block the blood in your feet, giving you aches and ants.
