It would be interesting to confirm the construction.
The 2018 sandwich construction looks pretty damn good but the trade-off is that a 14 x 26 often weight in excess of 28 lbs for 262L.
Not an issue on a good DW but not the best on flat water.
I think that for same volume, JL sandwich construction is a little bit lighter.
I am wondering if the process could have been refined for 2019 and bring these boards more in the 26 lbs range and close to JL.
Yes, but I'm not so sure it's the construction materials or process that explains the weight difference, but the greater skill and care taken in the construction. That Vietnam factory (Kinetic
panjiva.com/Kinetic-Sports-Co-Ltd/4722695) produces a better product IMO than Cobra (which make many Naishes) or the Chinese factories (which make some others, I believe) because they have superior skills and their QC procedures are stricter.
In other words, I think the Malikos would be the same weight as the Jimmy Lewis boards like the Sidewinder etc if they were also made in the Kinetic factory. The 2017 Sidewinder I had was beautifully made: very light and yet exceptionally durable. My M14 was like that too.
