true true. but are they really twice as strong like the price tag suggests. Id had a few surftechs yep they are strong but not worth 2-$300 more no way. Keep in mind Surftech-Cobra was once a no name factory and they also copped their fair share of criticism, actually its still copping a bit from high performance shapers. Isn't their construction vacuum glassed sandwich coolite construction. that construction has been around since the 80s guys....ask the clubbie shapers. Surftech is all about duplication. Mass production...Its simple business its a Macdonalds guys.
quality of materials, from the foam out...like dtm says....and also look at shape. Yes the shape of say a surftech isnt as refined (but is getting closer with their ultrflex range) as a custom but they are atleast being designed by known shapers. also back up and support.....
Just a note -Surftech make the cheapest boards in the market...why? they use less materials.
They rely on their vacuum molding process to create strength. Funny cause they are the most expensive. There is no point talking about blanks, cause blanks types are related to volume and buoyancy then related to performance not strength. Blanks are ALL FOAM. Foam is never strong regardless off density. Board strength is related to glass. How many Surftech boards are being ridden at the heavies waves spots in the world (ship sterns and Jaws etc) by Hamilton, Hipwwod, Mathews and other big wave chargers? None! Don't believe the marketing and hype. Any manufacturer, can copy any board and they do and will if they want. All manufacturers can copy any board made by ANY shaper. SUP shapes are designed to suit ability. So select a shape that suits your ability, not a brand that suits an ego. Ask how much glass is used 2 to 3 layers are common on beginner boards. Check if that company has any BAD press. Remember Beginners need flat, long, square railed boards, it makes the improvement curve faster. Most of these new companies buying boards from china are designed for beginners for due purpose paddle/ surf. Thats why their shapes seem "boring" or "not there yet" to advanced SUP surfers. Remember! Light boards perform better but usually are weaker cause less materials were used achieve this. Find a shape check the glass. Forget Brands. Hope this helps
so I guess JM doesnt surf his own Surftechs when he's over their ....and re laird, desnt he ride custom boards for that stuff anyway??? what about the PSH guys and the Naish guys etc etc most of those Big name guys riddng more than just a normal wave are ridding customs....in house or not.
I argree with your points on foam....but what i was saying was quality, not strength....yes the 2 can be related. But not just foam, but all the materials and the tooling in which they are assembled.
You seem to have picked Surftech out??? I have NO affliation with them. I was using them along with naish psh etc as examples over stuff like ATX or gulliver. I have how ever, owned 4 different brand boards...the Surftech copped the worst abuse and handled it the best...so less materials or not, its working
I also dont get where ego comes from??? if you have looked carefully at these boards (ATX and gulliver) its not just the shape, its the feel and quality that is missing compared to the others....hence the price difference. The ATX/Gulliver boards are being marketed as beginner boards not just becasue of shape and or price

as for are Surftechs/Naish/PSH etc worth the extra dollars to a ATX/Gulliver....for me EVERYTIME...why? well getting a board repaired costs money and time and time without that board....also for me its the shape and knowing if something goes wrong through the fault of manufatcuring there will be someone to case up.
