My Frank AXIS 8'6'' x 17''inches @ 120 Litres goes unreal on Kihei BUT on Maliko with so much Ocean swell moving around, I was struggling (pi@#ing into the wind) to even stand on it.

Cynthia is a Weapon of a Water Women on the Downwind GATOR Foilboard. Can even do the flatwater Pop-Up at Jeremy Riggs Tuesday mornings learn to Pop-Up class Kahului Harbour. I can't Pop-Up in flatware yet, I'm gassed after 13 paddle strokes.

Cynthia is 63yo was a BayWatch Babe in her youth did a few episodes on BayWatch as a Windsurfer Chick, that got rescued by the man David Hasselhoff on the show. Cynthia tell a classic story about the BayWatch show. I loved watching BayWatch in the 80's. I would drool like a St. Bernard Dog On A Hot Summers Day at the Beauty of the females in that show "nearly spraining my wrist" I too ended up becoming a Lifeguard on the Gold Coast did like 14 years on the beach Plus 10 years with Surfing Queensland great Jobs you get super fit.

My only fame in TV is I did like 4 Vegemite Commercials from 1963-65 Black & White TV. I'm the original Vegemite Kid.

To me it was a magical era to be born in 1962 - So many people I've met who are now 63yo my age, that are still going strong (like a little child that wants to go outside & play in the ocean) like good mate Randy Royce & Alan Cadiz & many more 63yo here on Maui. LOVE IT. We all get old if you live long enough.

I had My Best Maliko Run on the 8'10'' x 19" @ 115 Litres the other day - Got some nice Bumps did my fastest speed 23kph or 14mph my Hearst rate got up to like 166 @ 98% paddling for those Bumps; "gasping for air" my resting heart rate is 39. My heart rate drops super fast.

Hospital Story:- Heart Rate is a funny thing. About a week before I landed on Maui last year 2024, I felt a hernia appear down in my lower groin thinking Oh No WTF so I had to have a hernia operation when I get back to Australia (talk about babysitting a groin hernia while learning how to Downwind foil on Maui is not fun, I had to harden up). Before I go under the knife I said to the Anesthetist before she administers anesthetics that my resting heart rate is 39 - - The reason why I told the Anesthetics Nurse is they stress out if the patients heart beat is too low when they're brining the patient back from aesthetics the Anesthetist get very stressed out. I did 2 years in the Operating Theatre as a Theatre Orderly Technician. You see everything I enjoyed the job did afternoon shift so I could still go surfing everyday. Surfing always comes first.

Went to Oahu for the DaHui North Shore 4th July Prone paddleboard Race and the VOYAGER Hawaii Kai Downwind Challenge Foilboard Race.

I'll start off with the DaHui 4th July Race, I'm still a 100% Surfer got my first surfboard at 9yo 1971 Redhead Beach Newcastle (Col Smith territory Free Flight CHANNEL MAN) I'm now 63yo so I've been Surfing now 54 years already, even though I was born on Bondi Beach and have been going to the beach since Day One.

Stoked to get a First Place Finish in the 12ft Stock Prone paddleboard Division my brother from another mother Blair Thorndike got 3rd Place Finish.

The over 60's 12ft Prone Paddleboard Stock Division is so competitive. Some Big Names as in Hard Core Surfers Paddle in this age Division.

Downwind Prone Paddleboarding is such great fitness if you are a Surfer.

I entered in the VOYAGER Hawaii Kai Downwind Challenge Foilboard Race. But pulled out. I'm thinking if you can't do a DRY Maliko Run yet the Hawaii Kai Run is way more harder - Watching the Start just up from Sandy Beach there was so much water moving around But the ELITE foilers took off like it was just a walk in the Park, Entertaining to Watch. Just made it back to Kaimana Bech at the Finish Line to watch the Winner cross the finish line. He did it in like 36 minutes I believe. this Downwind Run is like 18 kilometres or 11.18 miles. I'm guessing.

Die with Zero is a GREAT READ, I gave it a 10 out of 10. I read this Book only about 2 months ago.

The funny thing about this BOOK Die With Zero is I have lived like this Book my whole life without knowing - My only regret in life was not going to Bali when I was 16yo in 1978 (I had a Good Paying Job working as a Garbologist at night so I could go Surfing of a Day as in like Every Day) got paid $172 per week equivalent to say $1,700 dollars in todays money. I chickened out of going to Bali because my best mate at the time did not want to come to Bali with me (I didn't want to travel by myself) we were both Hardcore Surfers. I did go to Bali when I was 18yo in 1980, by myself - I love Traveling to new Surfing Destination like don't give me 10 Grand, I'll get the next plane out of Sydney & f@#k off with a Surfboard Quiver.

Like last year I was ringing freight company on Oahu from Maui: - What a Punish it is talking to an Americans over the Phone. Like Australians speak English Americans speak English, Australian understand Americans when they talk. BUT American "can not" understand Australian English like WTF. For over 40 years already when I'm talking to an American over the Phone you have to talk to them; like you would a little 5 year old child that has Downsyndrome; they are soooo dumb mate! I just cannot give this 18ft unlimited SIC Race SUP away - The FUN Memories it has given me here on Maui Paddling Downwind Maliko are Priceless. I'll get her inside the house somehow and hang her up on the Lounge Room Wall.

Paddle IMUA Race had like 139 SUP foilers at the start of a Maliko Race; this Sport is growing fast - there was a time no so long ago when STAND UP Paddling had like 230 Paddler at the start of a Maliko Race "fun times"

It was Great catching up with this Legend & good mate Mike Jucker. I luv listening to his interviews a Mike Jucker is a hardcore Honolulu Bay Local SURFER in the Winter time.


Mike Jucker & myself share a lot in common when it comes to SUP foiling Downwind we are Both KOOKS trying hard to work this sport out, I have had some long great BUMPS on Foil BUT always eat it or Breach from going too fast - it's a long punishing road.

I did a little bit better at this years IMUA; I climbed the ladder one spot higher (a big achievement) & shaved 5 minutes of my time. I nearly came 4th last but I hit the reef at Kanaha & lost 4th last position. Not to worry there is always next year, too better oneself. Maybe in 10 years time I'll be in the middle of the pack.



How good are the Top Men & Women they are such Weapons "Stoked" for them. Kane Dewilde has so much Talent & he's a super nice guy to talk story with.

What a Humbling Journey how to fDOWNWIND FOIL it's the most hardest Ocean Sport to learn. The swear words that come out of one's mouth from the frustration of learning ocean foiling, luckily no-one can see you loosing out in the ocean from the frustration this sport makes you go through.

Last year when I first started my DOWNWIND FOILING Journey on MAUI, I started to write a journal - I was telling Good Mate Alan Cadiz about my Journal Journey of Progression. Then Allen tells my he did the same thing every time Alan Ocean Foiled he would would Journal Journey also he said Phil I took me 80 Ocean Foil Sessions to work it out. Good Mate Ralf Sifford is unto 500 in his Ocean Foiling Journal Journey & Ralf is very GOOD at Ocean Foiling.

It's Now Day Number 45 of the journey and had my best Downwind Run (I was up on foil for extended periods of time getting some great Bumps traveling at 23.4kph or 14.54mph & did a good personal best time I was aiming for "Stoked") only to Sugar Cove 8km or 5 miles - once I am happy/satisfied with myself working out Sugar Cove only then will I start doing the Full Maliko run 14km or 9 miles

How I got into DOWNWIND OCEAN PADDLING

I started Surfing at Beautiful Redhead Beach Newcastle in 1971. I was 9yo I got very good at the sport. Sam Egan has looked after me for 54 years already Sam Egan will die in the Shaping Bay Sam Egan is like 83yo one of The Best Surfboard Shapes in Australia ( I have like 20 Sam Egan Surfboards & 4 Mark Richard surfboard) There was a time when I'd have to get a new Surfboard every 10/12 week the Surfboard would be destroyed from Surfing too much, I just loved Surfing. I went to the beach every day I could (Got Surfed Out with every session Surfing Uncrowded Waves) It's now 2003 I'm getting so frustrated with the crowded line-up being wave starved in the surf. I see Jamie Mitchell paddling past on this 18ft Prone Paddleboard - We Talked Story - Jamie introduced me to Downwind Ocean Paddling in May of 2003 - it's now July 2025 - So now I've been Ocean Paddling for like 22 years & One month already - I still try and Go Surfing on my Shortboard everyday. I'm back on the twin-fins, Old Man's Boards.

It's now 2007 I get talked into doing my first Hawaiian Molokai2Oahu Channel Crossing. On Oahu I heard there's a Hennessy's Paddlebord Race on Maliko Maui. I fly to Maui do this Maliko Run and was Blown Away at How GOOD Maliko is for Downwind Paddling - I feel in love with Maliko from my first day - I saw Unlimited SUP Paddleboard for the first time & found out Who Makes These Board, Mark Raaphorst, I hunted Mark Raaphorst down, got a unlimited SIC SUP sent to Australia & defected to unlimited SUP paddling - I was the first Bloke in Australia to have an Unlimited SUP & got very good at this Sport I could do a Maliko Run in 60 minutes "Stoked" Fun Times. Did Molokai2Oahu SOLO in 2010 and Smashed the Field winning First Place over 40's Division 6th across the line - I look back that Trophy cost me like 45 Thousand Dollars BUT the memory was worth it.

When I started Ocean Foiling I was on the AXIS 1401 with the 784mm Fuselage - then went to the AXIS 1201 with the 700mm Fuselage - as of yesterday I went on my new AXIS Wing the 1160 Fireball, 700 Fuselage & 50 Skinny tail (Game Changer) Slowly working out the Grind of Foiling Downwind.

In the Surf I use a 5ft x 22'' x 4" @ 50 litres, with 1100 Spitfire with 640mm fuselage and 45 Skinny (Love it)


My SHRINE in the Toilet, every Poster is a Awesome Memory.


I still Paddle a SUP in flat water for fitness it's Great fitness I have a STANDAMARAN the only one of it's kind in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.




And I still Paddle a 12ft Prone Paddleboard for fitness if your a SURFER it's a must it's great fitness for Surfing.

Winds Gusting from the North at 40+ knots - it was a 8+ out of 10, the white caps just covering all of Kihei or should I just say (Sheep in the Field). The Bumps were unreal & the Glides were super Long - I did my fastest time to date; I've had 2 Great Days in a row it's got To Be the AXIS 1160 Fireball front Wing with the 50 skinny Tail. It's starting to click I'm Kick Goal on a Foil Downwind Runs.

Kihei was So Good (all the Wind Maps lined up Perfectly - Randy is a Guru on the Phone Apps) there was some Big Bumps, let's see what today brings? hoping for another Kihei Run. BUT we all know how fickle Kihei can be.

In February 1985 I go to the North Shore of Oahu to try my luck in the Big Stuff like 10/12ft is my limit. A couple of day before I landed on Oahu, Waimea Bay was like 40ft with Ace Cool being the stand out of that swell. It would have been great to just sit on the rocks at Waimea Bay & watch.

I'm at Sunset Beach standing there watching this building swell there these 3 young Hawaiis standing close by watching the building swell also. I say "G'day" All 3 Hawaiians say Hay "Haole" I got to surf Uncrowded 10ft Sunset. The following day Sunset was like 15ft too big for me, PRO Surfer Martin Potter was out there just Ripping - I found out 12 months what "Haole" means KOOK FROM THE MAINLAND well I'll I could to was "wet myself with laughter".

So I go to Haleiwa after surfing Sunset for a feed and find this Awesome Looking Red & White Hawaiian Shirt. I Had to Buy it. Anyway that night I go for dinner at Pizza Hut in Haleiwa (I was just sleeping in my hire-car) I'm now wearing this Awesome Red&White Hawaiian Shirt, I order a Pizza while talking story with the half Hawaiian half Floridian waitress. Anyway cut a long story short She invites/lets me stay at her place at Sunset Beach - All I can say is, it's was like coming out off (Bucking Shoot Number 3 on Heavens Above) this Sheila was Bulk Fun. I had a great time surfing all day & then rolling around on the lounge of a night with this Sheila (Yes Please Mr Wizard, can I have some more, thank you).

I got to Surf Laniakea 10/12ft on a North Swell it was just PUMPING. I could not catch the 12ft Bombs as the Hawaiian were all over it. Michal Ho was just Ripping surfing these 12ft Bombs like it was 4ft, awesome to watch. I had to settle for the 10 footer But I was OK with that.

Getting back to my Red&White Hawaiian Shirt I wore that Red&White Hawaiian Shirt every time I went out into town at nigh of the City of Newcastle - if that Red& White Hawaiian Shirt could "talk" it had a 99.9% susses rate when it came to women with my Red&White Hawaiian Shirt. I rolled around in the sand with Hundreds and I mean Hundreds of Women. My best mate "The Legend" roller around in the sand with 58 different Girls in one year, what a "Legend" - me, my best was like 26 Girls in one year, my nick name back then in Newcastle was the "Rooster" (so what does a Rooster do with all the Hens he sleeps with them all) And I was only going out now & then as I had to save money for new surfboards & my Surfing Sojourn once a year. There's just something about "The Scent of a Woman" I just luv'm.

Fun Memories that Red&White Hawaiian Shirt has given me in my youth. It doesn't fit me anymore, I looked like Starving Marvin the little Ethiopian Black Kid - I had these Board-Bumps on my right rib-cage from being to skinny & surfing to much I had to Paddle on my left side for years. When I die I'll be cremated in that Red&White Hawaiian Shirt.

Hanging out with my Dad in Newcastle a couple of years ago my Dad had Dementia what a cruel way to Die. Anyway I'd take my Dad out from the Nursing Home and we'd go for a couple of Beers at Redhead Beach SLSC, letting My Dad wear my favourite Red&What Hawaiian Shirt so we could look like twins.

Another Great Kihei Day 6+ out of 10. Winds Gusting from the North at 30 knots - The Bumps & Glides were unreal .

That certainly looks like 1070 conditions for us older heavier guys, or if you are happy on the 1160 maybe try to get your hands on a smaller 40 or 45 skinny rear, it will handle the bigger bumps better.

I was on the 1201 for quite some time, as I was a little hesitant to go smaller as the 1160 BUT I hardened up & said today is the day. The 1160 Helped Me Big Time in improving my skills for Downwind Foiling - I stuffed up yesterday though as Kihei was firing again But the wind was a little lighter in the 20/30 knots rang, so I follow my Local Maui Mates lead for a bigger foil & jumped back on the 1201. once I got up on foil, I regretted it WHY did I go back to the 1201 I should have stayed on the 1160 - So hoping Kihei Turns On Today (I'm 1160 all the way NOW) - The Big Guns are Foiling in the Maui2Molokai Race today looking forward to reading the Race Results. Me not ready for M2M me beginner KOOK. Once I can do a Maliko Dry Run only then will I sign-up for M2M. Been loving the 50 skinny maybe next Maui Season I'll go to the 40 skinny. Kind of not ready for the 1070 just yet, I'll wait till I master the 1160 the 1160 is certainly a Game Changer.

If I ever won lotto (I do spend $20 a week on lotto, you've goto be in it to Win it) I'd buy a House on Maui. I could live on Maui for like 4 months of the year do 2 months in the Summer Downwinding & 2 months in the Winter Surfing Honolulu Bay.

I alway try and do a 8/10 weeks tour on Maui every year this year I can only do 7 weeks. My lady friend thinks I'm only going to Maui for 5 weeks "hahaha" as I have 2 Dogs now, she's Blowing-Up already!!! But my 2 Dogs are Happy well feed & living in a 5 star resort at my Place (it's a Dogs Life) it's a real buzz when you see your Dogs Smiling at You.

I have surfed Ma'alaea way back in 2008 but it was only Small 3ft - Would have been Epic to be on Maui on that Famous Ma'alaea day (16/07/22) I was is Southern Mexico Surfing other Pumping Waves.

How Good are the Top 10 Male & Female Foilers in this years Maui2Molokai - How fast can a foiler GO - look at Kane de Wilde; Time (I hope the M2M organisers don't get Kane to Pee in a Bottle) - from when I used to Paddle my unlimited 18ft SIC SUP across the Pai'lolo Channel, I could do it in 3 1/2 hours NOW The Foilers are Doing it in like 96 minutes, Like WOW Unreal.

So the Pai'lolo crossing to Kaunakakai Harbour is one of THE BEST Downwind Runs on this Planet; It's like 27 miles or 43 kilometres crossing. I love the Pai'lolo Channel especially when you pass the Kamalo Buoy, the Pai'lolo Channel just "Lites UP" the Bumps are insane.

So I'll have a Go at Calculating "Remember I Never Went To School" I don't even have a School Certificate, But WHO Gives a f@#K. (The Chinese Say 100 miles of Travel is More Educational than 100 years of School). Me; Travel is not reward for working, it's a education for living.

I only understand Kilometres when calculating. So 96 minutes divided by 43 kilometres equals 2 minutes 23 seconds per kilometre that's flying on a foil for a Pai'lolo crossing - My fastest ever was 3 minutes 20 seconds per kilometre once I past the Kamalo Buoy on a unlimited 18ft SUP usually I could do a 4 minute kilometre. BUT it's exciting to see Guys & Girls going under a 2 minute kilometre when foiling, Maliko.

I just love watch the WSL; World Surf League. It's a real Buzz watching the World Best Surfing at an Elite Level. I watch ever WSL event from start to finish. I was a level 3 International Judge as well and have Judged events at a High Level - also a level 2 Coach.




I've surfed JBay in the early 90's when Apartheid was still strong. What a wave Jeffreys Bay is. l love the place - off a morning when you go and check the surf at Jeffreys Bay there was around 150 Bottle Nose Dolphins surfing the waves in the line up - You've got to see that to believe it. It's National Geographic stuff, a very humbling experience.

As a GROMMET I was a very big fan of Shaun Tomson from reads the TRACKS Mags (I Brought every TRACKS Mag from 1973 till 1992 from 1992 Tracks had to many add so me no buy anymore) Tracks was the NEWS Paper Bible) and watching "Free Ride"

I loved this Surfboard 6'4'' I rode it to death when that Surfboard died I asked Sam Egan to copy the dimension and shape me one "Magic Surfboard"




Shaun Tomson came to Burleigh Heads about 3 years ago, as 1978 World Champion Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew was having a function, in walking distance from my Place. I had to get a Photo taken of me & Shaun Tomson.


this one time I spent 6 months in California Surfing Lower Trestles - I heard a Big 20ft Swell was hitting Hawaii. So I dive up to Santa Barbara (20th December 1995) RINCON was 6ft of PUMPING PERFECTION. Shaun Tomson & Tom Curren were out surfing they were just Ripping I surfed from Sun-Up till Sun-Down only coming in for like 1/2 hour for a drink of water & some food for fuel.

It was Mike Spaulding from Maui we had many a Talk Story on the Old Maliko Shuttle Bus some 15 years ago. Mike Spaulding has Swam all the Hawaiian Channels from Big Island to Kauai with No Cage Assistance "Mike Spaulding" is a Weapon of an Ocean Swimmer Mike's even swam the English Channel.

My apologise I made a mathematical error/mistake - I'll recalibrate Kane De Wilde did 86 minutes not 96 minutes - So 86 minutes divided by 43 kilometres equals 2 minutes per kilometre that's SUPER FLYING for a Pai'lolo Channel Crossing "WELL DONE" Kane you are a "True Weapon." I Recon & Believe by next years 2026 M2M Pai'lolo Crossing Kane or some Super Human young 20yo will Go Under the 80 minute mark for 27 miles or 43 kilometres.

Today Maliko was Roar with so much energy moving out there "Maliko Was Angry Out There Today My Friend" Got some Great Bumps But it was a Struggle for a KOOK like me. The Good NEWS is/was, I only had 2 falls & got up super quick & did an OK time. What A Workout, Beer o'clock already.

hahaha, GOLD. I was just using Old School Arithmetic to keep it simple, PeterP. YES; I could have wrote 2 minutes and 1.09 seconds per kilometre But. I went to the closest decimal point; 2 minutes per/k. You went to school, I went to the beach. All Good.

I lived on Kauai for a couple years and fell in love with HI. Have been to all the islands and still love Kauai the most but they are all very special in their unique way. I've lived in the US Virgin Islands now most of my adult life which is not quite as nice as HI but still pretty darn good. Two of my mates from the VI are out there. Maybe you have met them? Terry is a long time SUP paddler and has done the M2O several times. Adam was out there last year and again this year. Keep an eye out for them and say hello, I'm sure you would enjoy talking story with both of them.

Anyways, keep going with all the HI stories and live updates here, I'm absolutely loving them! One day I hope to get out to Australia and check it all out. As a surfer, foiler, and paddler, the ocean is where I love being the most and I have huge respect for all oceanic athletes!

G'day tangtonic, yes I know Adam I spoke with Adam the other day Adam's a Great Bloke & very good Foiler. I met Adam around 2014/15 - I also would love to come to the Virgin Islands, I have photos of Pumping Waves there & the water looks as clean/clear as Glass, I bet the girls in the VI are as Beautiful as the waves. I have never been to Kauai I really do need to do a tour there I'd only bring my surfboards though as Kauai is my Bucket List Dream is to Surf Hanalei Bay & if I'd ever ran into Serena Brooke on Kauai, I'd Start drooling like a St Bernard on a Hot Summers Day at her Beauty, wouldn't I love to roll around in the sand with her.


The East Coast of Australia has some Great Waves tangtonic. Get your hands on Mark Warren's Atlas of Australian Surf. If you can that books like 40 years old already. But don't come to the Gold Coast from September to January it's like one foot & onshore But it's great for Prone Foiling that time of year. From Wollongong South there's plenty of Pumping Reef's & Point Breaks but bring a 3/4 steamer with you it's cold down there. You'll enjoy the drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast. Hundreds of great waves along that 800 mile stretch.


I got Honolulu Bay PUMPING in the Winter of 2017/18 It was a Bucket List Dream of mine it took me 40 year to tick that one off, From watching FREE RIDE in 1977. This was my quiver I took to Maui that winter from my 8'2'' gun to my 6'8'' Single-Fin, single-fins are so fun the ride they really clean up your surfing.


There's a Contest held at Burleigh Heads Point every January called the Burleigh Single-fin Festival. I surfed in it some 20 years ago even had a heat against Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew - these day's all to PRO's enter this event, so it's Awesome to Watch. You've got to watch PRO Surfer Joel Parkinson ride a Single-fin, he's awesome to watch.

I was Secretary/Treasurer of Burleigh Heads Boardriders in 2001/02/03 & Helped make Burleigh Heads Boardriders (the Richest Boardriders Club in Australia) I put a Charity Luncheon Together - Everybody who attended that day walked away with a Big Smile on there faces, "so for me it ment a job well done." We had like over a hundred thousands dollars in the Bank; not bad for a non-profit organisation.
