On my paddleboard I have already tried the washer when using the big wing to reduce the lift. But! What I found out was less control in up & down stability with a large wing in fairly heavy surf at shoulder to head high. That is. After getting the foil up I had a bit of difficulty in keeping the foil steady in a horizontal position. I found I was nose diving more than breaching & found I was bouncing up & down more instead of keeping straight. Probably due to my balance muscles being used to the original foil set up. Also I think I should have used a smaller tail wing with washer for more steadiness.
But now with a medium main wing instead of the large on heavier waves I won't need any tail wing adjustments.
The large wing will be great in weak waves. Large rear tail wing will only be used in the weakest waves. Probably won't need washer adjustments at my weight of 80kgs plus or minus 3kgs.
Oh. And my learners review of the Neilpryde Medium wing is SMOOTH & MAGIC! Finally had it out in fairly smooth conditions, waist & shoulder height waves that break then rebuild with reducing whitewash until hitting shore break. Approx. 150 meter rides that let me try out a few carves. Loved it!

The diagram is correct. I couldn't keep my Naish XL in the water on some shoulder high waves in the neutral position but when I angled it up, it stayed a little calmer and more manageable. Nice to have the adjustment vice swapping out foils.

Here is an illustration from our local wing-man over at FoilSmart. It shows you changes in perceived lift, drag, speed and maneuverability. It shows effect on changing angle of attack of rear wing + moving rear wing back or forth if your wing allows this.

Isn't this going to damage the board?
There is a few degrees difference in AOA between the foil all the way to the front and all the way to the back.
Somehow it is much harder to catch a wave with my foiled sup then with my normal sup which is the more or less the same size but 10 liters less volume.
I would like to change the AOA but with a wedge , shim or whatever it is called, but cannot find anything until now.

Any tips?

Hi Camarillo. I didn't trust washers either. It depends on the thickness you need. I started with using a piece cut from a nylon cutting board. This piece wasnt a wedge & only a spacer fitted between the trailing two bolt holes & the board. Good enough to temporarily find what thickness works best. When I found what thickness wedge I needed, I found a wedge on ebay under chainsaw wedges. It was orange but unfortunately 30 mills thick not 15 mils thick. So I painstakingly sliced it in half with a hacksaw. Wasnt easy. I was told a band saw would be easier. This gave me two wedges that I put side by side & contacts the whole surface area of the foil plate.
Anyway, I think an easier option is to make one out of epoxy by getting a lump of kids plasticine or play doe on a level surface. Squash the top of it so it is flat & level with a piece of plywood or similar. Then cut a piece of plywood same length & width of the plate mount or use the plate mount itself & put tape over the bolt holes & place on top of the plasticine & only push down on the end two corners down to the required thickness you need. So if you want a 5 mil wedge push it down about 6 to 7 mils so the other end is sunk down 1 or 2 mils so the epoxy wont spill over the edge when poured in. Then take away the plywood. The plasticine is now your mold to pour in the epoxy. You may even want to place some fibreglass matting in as well. Once cured it is an easy process of pulling & wiping away the plasticine & drilling the holes. I have done similar to make go pro mounts so I know it works & is simple. Dont use plaster instead of plasticine! Epoxy sticks hard to it!

I measured my setup and I need the baseplate of the foil to come down 7 mm in the back to get the mast perpendicular to the deck and the fuselage parallel to the deck.
The baseplate is 230 mm long so the angle is now arctan 7/230 =1.7 degree off

I would prefer to get a 3D printed wedge but have to find someone here in Capetown that will do the printing for a reasonable price....

I think I will start with 5 mm and use a 1 mm cutting board in 5 layers.

Good work. Seems odd designing a board that is that far off with the mast in the sweet spot. Anyone asked JP about this?
Pretty sure theres plenty I can work on to improve my take off, but I was surprised how much difference angling the rear wing made, so might give this a go. Cheers.

Very nice. Kite surfed the Axis 750 wing today it was awesome compared to the bigger sizes for kiting. Depowered kite totally and rode bumps downwind. Will not downwind paddle as this is so much fun. No car needed just fly upwind then turn around did 40km

I started making a wedge from layers of plastic from ice boxes. And I got myself some longer screws, 30mm

Yesterday I went out with a 4 mm wedge and I am slowly putting the foil more forward.
For the first time I didn't have the feeling that the foil had too much drag to be able to catch a small or not breaking wave.
I was able to catch waves before they got steep.

This morning I added 2 more layers the wedge is 4.8 mm now....
Once I have figured out what thickness I need I will have to get a real wedge, 3D printed or epoxy resin.

I would't mind a solution from JP/NP , I bought their combo thinking that it would be working out of the box...

Hi Camarillo. I have got the JP 7' and the Neil Pryde surf foil. I've had to move the foil right forward in the tracks to make the combination work. Only problem is then I feel my front foot is too far forward to be able keep the nose down, often slipping off the deck pad at the front.
Looking at your shim picture, surely you'd need to shim the plate higher at the tail if positioned back in the tracks given the rocker of the board. Your picture looks like you're shimming up in the front of the base plate, perhaps increasing drag and a negative foil angle of attack. Or have I got it wrong.
A dealer said the board tracks were designed to position the foil right back for wind foiling and forward for sup foil.

Hi JT No I am shimming the back of the plate and the foil is quite far forward in the boxes. The other marks are for windfoiling. If I move the foil more to the front I end up standing in front of the pad. Perhaps my stance is too wide , and should I move my back foot a bit forward.

I tried out a 4.8 mm wedge this morning and it was an improvement again compared to 4.0 mm
Isn't it just logical that when paddling for a wave the foil should have as little drag as possible? And that is when the fuselage is more or less parallel with the deck and not when it is pointing down!

Interesting. Having my front foot any further forward than the makings for the front strap, feels like a compromise when up on the foil. (Generally have my Naish set up so the back of the mast is slightly in front of the kick pad.)

With the mast in the position and the board floating flat in the water, it'd need a 5ish mm wedge to have the mast perpendicular. I've assumed that when I'm paddling for a wave, the water isn't flat, the board is rocking with my paddling action, so a small change to the mast angle might not be that important. But maybe it helps with getting up on the foil earlier, more efficient paddling etc. Worry slightly about not having the plate (and any wedge) bang flush with the board.

Thanks Camarillo. I was wrong and only realised when I used my NP foil today after riding mostly the GoFoil. Definitely the plate needs shimming if mounted further back so will try it too. The NP foil is definitely smoother than the GoFoil which whistle, but requires more maintenance. Am looking forward to getting the longer mast too. As I catch the wave I tend to slide my back foot back onto the pad.

Why bother. It's not that hard to buy a bondo spreader at the local auto parts stores. A perfect tapered plastic shim set.

So going back to the JP foil board. Just wondering how you guys are going on the 7ft? 115 litres? Do you think you could have gone to the 6ft 8" 96 litres? Just wondering what the difference is in stability in choppy water. I weigh average of 80kgs. I know I could handle the 96litres in smoother water. But just like SUPs it is a big difference when the waters get rougher. And I like to stay out & not go home! Haaa! Too much fun.
And what construction? Carbon or wood.? Is it worth the difference in cost?
I am leaning to the 6ft 8" 96litres in wood. Due to having a 7ft stable foil board for lumpy or choppy seas.
Trying to keep cost down too. Unfortunately have to pay for delivery down my way which adds about another $200. on top.
Hoping my local surf shop will have something in stock but I doubt it. Way behind the times in NSW Wollongong region Australia.

I am 85 kg, the board is so much more stable than my normal sup, a starboard Hypernut 7'2x28 @ 105 liter
@ 80kg and because you have a very stable backup board you just have to go for the 6'8

I've got the 7' Wood version and its stable enough to paddle out in any sort of windy choppy horror I'm daft enough to paddle out into. (5' 11" 75kg, the wrong side of 50, previously comfortable on a 7' 8" Hokua SUP in most conditions) Balanced enough to spend a fair chunk of time paddling in foiling stance (front foot is in foiling stance most of the time). Feels bob on when up on the foil, but I'm not good enough at pumping yet to know whether a smaller board would be better.
Conditions here are often far from perfect and wave size can vary allot, as can the distance I've got to paddle out etc, so this board feel right for me. Spent enough time wobbling around on tiny SUPs to not go rushing down that route again just yet and I'd worry about the drag of paddling a semi-submerged board and foil. But if you've already got a board for choppier days then I guess it makes sense to go for the 6'8"

Thanks Mwstard. I have got the JP 6ft 8" now. Looks nice & thick & looks to be more stable than my JLewis SUP at about same volume. So crossing my fingers. Anyway it's narrow enough to prone if needed.

The board looks nice & thick & looks like it would be more stable than my JLewis Superteck at the same volume.
Attached the leg leash with floaty cork which has worked well & is nice, neat & secure.
Hoping to try it out soon between having skin cancers cut out. Will stick an aqua patch over the one on my neck. Ha! When you gotta go. You gotta go!
Only found an over sized 8ft 2" board bag to fit it in so have folded & tied the nose end over. So should do if I decide to have it permanently modified.
Can't wait to try it out.

No worries Camarillo. I'll take some pics on my first day on shore before or after I take it out.
I am interested how it will feel compared to my other 7ft heavy board.
I am also interested on its paddle speed & if it rides flat with its tail rocker.
I looked at the tail rocker when the board was laying flat on the carpet & it looks like it may need anything from a 3mm to 5mm wedge.
But, it all depends on how the board lays flat on the water with my weight on it for straight paddle speed. It all depends on my feet position & body weight distribution. Meaning will the board paddle faster in a normal SUP stance or in the front foot forward stance to surf stance. With 3 different stances I think would give 3 different paddle speeds due to 3 different angles of the foil.
But more critical in my view is the board deck being horizontal or parallel to flat water surface & my riding comfort whilst flying.
So in view of all this I may just have to adjust my stance & body weight distribution with the board as best as I can over a few rides or sessions before deciding to apply a wedge between the base plate & board.
