Hi all,

I got my first boat, a triton 24, two months ago and, with your advices concerning the mooring locations, I have moved it from Sydney harbor to burraner bay, great!

As it was a real bargain, the equipment onboard is quite rustic...in particular the sails:
1 head sail, really dirty when I bought the boat, with a lot of repair patches and only one reef line (dodgy...)
1 light Genoa? (on the picture) quite old too
1 light jib in good condition

Do you know if I can find some used sails for this boat, online? in the sydney region?
If not, which sail-maker would you recommend? and what would be the price?

My journey from Sydney harbour to cronulla was quite epic as I got a force 7 without being able to reduce the headsail enough...
Is it possible to add new reef points without having a sewing machine?...

Congratulations. The Triton 24 was my first boat too and in similar condition to yours! The boat is great for weekends with the fullhead room and the cockpit is very safe and protected.

I learnt quite a bit with that boat including from the results of a few scares almost running aground or on rocks because of the terrible sails I had! But back then I didn't know what a good sail was like and it does makes a huge difference both for sailing pleasure and safety. My mainsail was so baggy it was useless and the huge genoa unwieldy especially when I was singlehanding. Looking at your mainsail it sees to have a better shape than mine at least but hard to tell from one photo.

There's vacuwash in Sydney who professionally cleans sails but I would suggest that you get new or very good second hand sails...As mentioned above Secondsails.net provides used sails and last time I was there they had maybe hundreds. There are of course a number of local sailmakers and some offshore suppliers too which you can look at.

For equipment I suggest ebay both new and used (but make sure the used stuff still has life in it). There are some lessor known and newer brands to Ronstan and Harken out there with top gear and excellent prices.

Gday mate wondering how you went finding sails? Ive also got a triton and having trouble finding sails

hey,
wanted to buy a used main but after 2 months of pingpong emails with used sail detailers I gave up.
I could not afford a new sail from a local sailmaker (2k$) so I bought a new main from asia (will not make publicity here but can give details in private), was cheap, fast and I am happy.

Still have to change my genoa, a used one if I find, a new from asia if not.

I bought three sails from fareast sails and so far I am happy with the experience.
It's cheap and they are happy to lower the quoted price if you ask...
Still I feel average to make publicity for overseas sailmaker while I am sure there are really skilled ones around, but man... the price!
I guess the other big difference buying asian is that you get a sail that correspond to the measurements you gave, these are not necessarily the right ones for your boat while a local sailmaker will visit your boat and give you valuable infos and make perfect measurement.
But for a triton 24 it is quite straightforward to measure your triangles...

Not really good quality but you see quickly the sails at the end... will try to get something better during the week-end
