little update moved the solar panel this morning pumping 14.20 volts on its temporary wooden mounts. If it comes out summer this afternoon Ill put some epoxy filler on the anchor well and throttle areas.

Help me out here, what do the four coats of resin do that aren't being done by the three coats of varnish?

Time will tell. The first coat of resin had a penetrating thinner and then the final clear gloss water based coats hopefully will give a reasonably long finish. This was much the same finish I used on the tender.

Put a few fish scales in the cockpit yesterday. Beautiful day at sea with a fair bit of traffic. Several Hobart racers returning to Sydney. All seemed to be motor sailing. The one in the photo is the closest encounter, Kaleesie"'
While I was out I heard on the news of a yacht catching fire on the river near Nowra. For the locals it was near the Paper mill. TV news last night showed the remnants and said it was a 40 footer with a solo 52 year old. Others have said it was an Adams 31 and it was moored next to my yacht for 4 days while I was in SA. Hopefully there will be some follow up info. Apparently he was motoring East from Nowra. I suspect a cooker fire as the fire was pretty intense by all accounts.

Motored slowly over to Deeban Spit (big sandbar in the Port hacking) and anchored in close to the shore so I could get under and clean the prop. Motored home at a good clip.

Cleaned the mould off the cockpit cushions. ..bought cockroach baits bombs and spray...swept up cockroach crap...entertained visitors. ..enticed one to go up mast to investigate why halyard won't run freely. ..got hit with bad migraine. ..been laid up out of action

Finally got the chartplotter to see the AIS, so now have reports and plots of nearby vessels.

Now have to get the DSC radio to see the chartplotter for a GPS position!

I finally got all the basic components of my new windlass system in place. I had the shipwright install the windlass into the deck on the last haul out. Took longer than I expected to run the thick wiring, install the solenoid and circuit breaker. Today I put an extra thick PVC tube from the deck through to the lower storage locker which is now the new anchor locker. At first I ran the tube at a slight angle forward to keep the storage space as clear as possible thinking that the installation instructions about having a vertical drop couldn't be 'that' particular. However, when I compared the angled to the vertical drop (before glassing the tube in) I think the angle may have adversely effected the winding of the rope. I wasn't sure but I thought I'd better make the drop vertical, as recommended. Drilled another hole directly under the windlass and glassed in the tube (in photo it looks angled but it isn't).

Wound all the rope and chain in. Yay!

During this I also did my first chain to rope back splice which was fun.







Next,
- buy working up/down switch (mine's dodgy) and install in cockpit (anyone have any recommendations re best place for this?)
- assess what might be needed to protect the surface of the hatch/deck as the chain runs across it. Maybe some SS sheeting.
- install deck switch/es? Not sure I want a switch on deck so wondering if I can put it inside the anchor locker on deck. However, because the chain runs across the lid I'd need to keep a plastic winch handle somewhere forward so I can change it to free fall to lift chain to open locker to activate the switch. Then when it's up I'd need to do that again to close the lid. Gah, sounds like a hassle. Maybe I don't need switch/es at the bow. Any opinions based on experience???

Hopefully you killed all of those cockroaches. I have a pest control company and we treat quite a few boats especially when there is a german cockroach problem (they are the small ones)
If you buy maxforce cockroach gel on the internet and put tiny little dots of it every where where you think the cockies could possibly be you have a good chance od getting rid of them.

It's the top section of a fibreglass windsurfer mast, in this case its a red one. The end fittings are just dinghy spinnaker bits. Pick them up from dump recycle yards but you have to be quick. I use them for oars for my tender as well.

Thats easy then most sprays and baits will work on the big cockies. The biggest mistake people make is spraying around the baits so that the cockroaches are repelled from the area where you placed the bait.

What have I done to my sailing boat today?
well far to much to add to here but Icon has Aircon now again! After 2 breakdowns in two consecutive days it's finaly running stable.

1st day it was just a airlock caused by possible seaweed in the strainer, but this was not determined until I got back from my 1 hour drive to the pump specialist after a bench test. I got him to put a 240volt plug onto the pump motor so I could control the pum separte to the control box.....but after re-plumbing it still would not pump water so it wasn't until after I decided to suck on the outlet hose I ended up with salt water gushing down my throat!

2nd day after leaving the boat for 2 hours on my return I noticed the boat was hot ...water was pumping but the air flow was very limited. After calling on a fellow boatie friend he told me the coil winding box at frozen up and that the fan could not suck cool air through the ice! So I unthawed it while drinking large amounts of cold beer to keep cool...we where advised that do not leave the unit at 18degrees which I had done. Now it's set at 20 and running fine!

The water tanks where bone dry so they needed the 800litre top up.
The gas was empty so I replaced the 9kg bottle and spent over a hour trying to find the electronic relay that operates the gas!
Batterys where bone dry hope they recover!
Dinghy and exterior was filthy and the newish 6hp suzuki wouldn't still won't start!
A test sail was performed and she sailed at 5.8 knots in 15 knots of breaze just on the beautifully cut head sail.
The Auto pilot is bullet proof!
The Perkins runs smooth and felt quite powerful.


Still many jobs to be done but I must confess it's nice to be living aboard again and having stuff to do!
