I just paid an invoice for my mooring service. The mooring has a 33' yacht on it and sits in a quiet bay in about 12 foot of water

It needed 3m of 16mm chain, 5m of 24mm silver, a shackle, swivel and swivel pin (?), clear PVC tubing and $211 worth of labour.

All up bill incl GST was $607.75.

Does this sound like a reasonable charge?

My last service (same parts except without the swivel, shackle, pin) was $271 inc GST.

Same as yours in January, $414 in GST. 31 Foot in 3 metres. Labour & boat hire was $190 in that.

Might depend on where you are. In the Sydney harbour east that may be acceptable.
I pay on average $400 - $500 for a service in Careel Bay, but my boat is only 25 feet long in 6 metres of water.

The guy I use is in my bay, Pittwater Mooring Services. Robbie is a good bloke and you won't hear much bad about his service. If your guy had to travel to do the work, it could be part of the reason it's a bit more expensive.

Cheaper to buy your own second-hand scuba gear, you can get a decent kit for under $250 on gumtree.
The parts you described would be about $150 off the shelf I reckon, you'd be ahead on the first service!

That's true, although you may want to check your insurance fine print. If you service your own, they may not pay if it can be proven you're not a professional mooring contractor. RMS also want proof that it's been done correctly, though I've never been asked myself.
On the other hand, if you did it right, and over engineered it, you won't need to worry.

if its the first service in 8 years its a bargain

i pay 160 cash jubilee marine in woodford bay.
same service is 330 in rose bay...

It seems steep but it is a fair bit of work so it might be reasonable. I had a new one laid in the harbour west of the bridge and it was $900 or so.
My mooring services in Pittwater were never over $300 but it never needed that much work.
I don't know any insurance company that accepts owner servicing. If it hasn't been serviced and another boat hits your boat even if the mooring is ok they could well reject a claim.

Mooring contractor qualification ? I can't find any criteria, so we all are potential mooring specialist. Replace the wear parts annually and sign of on the job

I took over an exsisting mooring so thought i better get it checked out by a professional
Cost me $250 cash (discount for cash) thought that was pretty steep as it took him 40 min to swim out and take a few pics then write up a basic report

I dive on the mooring when I clean my hull and I had pushed the extent of wear on the smaller chain so I knew this would be a major service. ie rope and smaller chain replacement.

I am tempted to service it every second time myself now. I can go up a size on swivel, shackles and rope and it'll still be cheaper. Pining over the pin ends and seizing them as well is something that me as the owner will give special care and attention to.

Sydney is more expensive for almost anything. When I moved here I found my car service was cheaper, Woolies groceries were less etc etc. That's why the $600+ seems expensive after Sydney. I also took my boat off the mooring for a week to make it easier for him and he turned up on a day when it suited him to do several in the bay.

A friend of mine just got Jubilee to service his mooring in Birchgrove with new rope, plastic tube and swivel. Just over $200 and it's tricky on the harbour with moorings close together, ferry wakes and more exposure to the weather.

Yeah there wouldnt be too many barges/work platforms and contractors around there. This is why the high prices. A real shame for boat owners there.
for that money they should be doing a rock solid job but sounds like they dont.
Im slightly worried about giving up my secure mooring in the syd harbour for the unknown down in JB, but ill figure it out. Not getting much sailing lately with the boat up north and us down here in southern highlands.
sounds like im going to have to put the feelers out to find someone good. Maybe even the tug company from syd who i worked for to drop a weight in for me when they next tow a navy vessel up/down.

Peter Wherry from Jubilee is great. Im going to miss him. Ringle, its probably expensive in CC because the few or 1 contractor has a monopoly on the whole business. Sounds like south is similar. Syd is a weird place and it really pays to shop around. I was quoted 450 ph to do my mast lift before xmas. it ended up costing me 3 cases of beer stepped/unstepped. My boat cost the previous owner 1800 to antifoul. Theres a guy with his own slip who can do it for $700 in the harbour. The big money contractors are there for the people who want to make the phone call, get the job done with 0 input, effort from them and if you can afford it, why not. Personally ive lost faith in contractors generally - especially in Sydney as theyre spread so thin, they cant really do a good job or do the job at all. I gave up on riggers. Telling me in November they couldnt do my rig til after january and for a cost of $5000. Did it myself for $500, sailed the boat to Jervis and back by January. Im hearing this story over and over - especially regarding riggers. Pays to shop around!

Just had mine serviced nothing replaced $300.
It's bulls***t the harbour is cheaper than botany bay.

Double block, lift and inspect, replace 4x 20mm shackles. Just under $300. Peter laid the mooring about 12 months ago and was happy with his work.

There has been instances here and in Jervis Bay where the contractor serviced the wrong mooring.

I had Peter lay my mooring at Drummoyne. He did a great job although without the boat there he made it a bit short. I rang him and the next day he added a couple of metres.
Joe Walsh recommended him.
I know Joe isn't for everybody but he has done my rigs for the last 18 years. He is still the best and cheapest west of the bridge, if not in Sydney.
He rerigged MB last year before Lord Howe. I took MB too him last month for a rig check. No adjustments needed and he replaced my chafed furling line for the cost of the rope at a cheaper rate per metre than Whitworths charge for the stuff. No labour.
