Got no problem with paying. It's getting the boat lifted that's so frustrating. It's like a mechanic who won't do a blue slip unless your registered and fully insured.

Thanks tired, will give RACT a go. That's like Tasmania's NRMA? Maybe I can get insurance from New Zealand. ;-)

That does seem ridiculous, won't any insurer will give you enough cover to get a lift so a survey can be done.

It sure feels like that around Sydney. Slipways want more cover than insurers are willing to give without a survey. A Mexican standoff that would make Tarantino proud.

Just read RACT docs and seems they only want Tasmanian customers. TMD says "Own a Boat for private used primarily within 200 nautical miles of the Tasmanian coastline." Anyone with RACT and not moored in Tasmania?

Sounds like a royal pita. Comprehensive insurance to get hauled out & can't get a lift for a survey. May I ask how old is the vessel & what is she made of ?

I once bought a project boat off the Tweed River, it wasn't fit to sail to a marina for a lift so I arranged Gold Coast Cranes to lift it onto a truck. More recently I also put an offer on a boat at Coffs Harbour that eventually fell through. Prior to the offer falling over we were busy arranging a crane to do the lift for a pre purchase survey as there is no boat lifting facility at Coffs Harbour.

Is a crane an option, it was for me

edit: btw the lift at Tweed wasn't in a Marina, it was just at a jetty on a public street

Sure is woko. 40 years old and timber, two things insurers don't want to hear.

Great idea cammd. But where in Pittwater could you get away with that? Police would be there in minutes.
There are salvage guys with big floating cranes. Either that or find a surveyor who dives. Ha!

Not as far as I have experienced - insurers insist on an out of water survey and that is reasonable imho. This fellow does in water surveys but for lesser purposes - assume some other surveyors do as well.

New waves marine insurance didn't asked nothing about my Tasman 26, however, they charged me 980 bucks for comprehensive insurance. Now Pentaenius insurance is charging 1300 for comprehensive insurance for my Hunter 36. They did requested survey which I had ready. Maybe is worth to give them a call, otherwise new waves marine is the option.

If you search here for prior threads on Pantaenius it would appear that their cover is not very good as regards what is not covered.

I was with Pataenius. Their cover was excellent and included Lord Howe trips. You do have to be honest with them though.

They got a bad wrap from a WA owner who lied to them about his rig being surveyed. I've seen the documents and they had every right to reject the claim. He went public and eventually was made to look a liar when Pantaenius send people like me the full story.

I am with them now, best price I could find, been through the PDS with a fine tooth comb, the cover is the same as others as far as I could see. There is an extra exclusion zone this year for the top end but I know if you want to sail to those exclusion zones you call them and advise and they then cover you for an extra fee for the time your in that zone. Happy with that cause I am not paying for cover I don't need but then I can get it when I do need it and that goes for different zone all over the world.

I am curious to know....did the swing mooring require a certified condition report when making your insurance application?
Also, to be granted insurance....did the mooring also require to be checked and certified each year?

I've had my boat comprehensively insured with Youi for a number of years on a swing mooring in the Swan River in Perth. Maybe the swing mooring restriction is location dependent - ie they are happy with swings in some places, but not others. I've never had an inspection.

Just check the PDS. When l looked at Youi there was a clause about regular inspections stated something like "within x years of the claim".
Not against inspections per se but just factor the cost etc in (and the hidden clause).

I checked the PDS and there was a clause about "marine survey within 3 years of claim date", but only when specified as a special condition on the policy - which I don't have on my policy.

I've also checked about mooring inspections and there is a clause in the PDS requiring an annual service. The WA dept. transport only require an inspection every 2 years.

Yes it did need a report annually. I moved from Pittwater to Drummoyne and had to send them the new mooring details and report when I took up the mooring.
I'm very wary of getting insurance with cheap insurers who don't want reports. I worked in insurance and these companies are very very unlikely to pay out. Without reports the company has accepted on the condition of the boat and mooring they have literally hundreds of reasons not to pay.
In insurance, you get what you pay for.

Just a reminder guys, that Pantaenius doesn't cover solo sailing between sunset and sunrise, if that matters to you.

I changed my cover tonight before I read this from Pantanious to Anchorage, this was one of the reasons, the other is you only get 50% of boats value if it sinks at berth, mooring or anchor. Cost was about the same, limited to NSW only, which works for the next year, far less exclusions.

It's reasonable for a certified inspection of mooring apparatuses be required. A strange quirk, when a mooring contractor signed of on his own mooring for his own yacht for insurance was rejected, it looked like he would have to contract the opposition, but then common sense prevailed

Thanks everyone for your advice. I eventually went with Tudor Brokers. They were very helpful and got me a quote from Hiller Marine, which also trades as New Wave. The price was ok but not the cheapest here. The clincher was I didn't need a survey.

Now I can go to marinas are not be spat upon as some uninsured underclass.
